Lightbulb Absinthe cocktails?

SWIM told me that he wanted to share a couple of his absinthe cocktail recipes with SWIY The unique flavor of absinthe offers very high potential for some of the most interesting tastes SWIY's ever experienced. SWIM named his after Green Lantern characters, after seeing an absinthe cocktail bearing that name. These recipes use an absinthe glass for dosing. (approx 1.5oz)

Agent Orange- Absinthe and Red Bull. Just substitute water with RB, no need to add sugar. Equal parts sweet and sour. The best way SWIM can describe this one is that it's like looking left and right at the same time.

Star Sapphire- Absinthe and Cocaine energy drink. Same as above, just replace water with Cocaine. This results in a bright pink concoction that is delightfully sweet and easy to drink!

So, does SWIY have any interesting absinthe cocktails? SWIM wants to try mixing it with (iced) coffee, but is a little wary..

As to what "gum" is:
Quote:
As we mention syrup or gum so often, we think it a necessity to call your attention to the way of making and using it.

Take an enameled pot, of about half a gallon; put in this one and a half quarts of water and two pounds of loaf-sugar; let this boil over a slow fire; stir now and then, and skim well; if too thick, add a little boiling water, and strain into a bottle. It ought to be kept in a cold place. Do not prepare too large quantities, as it is best to have it fresh.
That should keep you busy for a while...

Re: Absinthe cocktails?

Wow, LOTS of good ideas in that one. Though the theme seems to be common in all of them (ice, bitters, gum), SWIM will definitely be exploring this formula for his cocktails. The mention of maraschino in the first one is also quite intriguing

Thanks!

Re: Absinthe cocktails?

I suspect that the "maraschino" in question is the liquor, not the red "cherry juice", it is made with the crushed pits and is quite exquisite. Though expensive you hardly ever use more then a dash, so it will last for some time. Don't settle for less, only the best, especially when it comes to absinthe.

I'm curious, you study Crowley?

Re: Absinthe cocktails?

Ah, SWIM was thinking of the cherry version of maraschino, which he thinks would definitely make his absinthe taste (more) interesting. He is definitely going to look into the liquor version though, as he's never heard of it and is always looking to try new and interesting things!

As for myself, I have in fact studied some of Crowley's work with great interest, though I must admit I rather prefer the works of (Carlos) Castaneda and the disciplines explained therein. What made you ask?

Re: Absinthe cocktails?

It is made from cherries, just not cherries that have been bleached of all color and flavor and dyed red with artificial cherry flavor. It is FAR superior in cherry flavor. You may need to shop around or go to a fancy liquor store, it's not something that will be in most corner stores.

Well the Star Sapphire made of absinthe and "cocaine" seemed like a mighty indication you were familiar with his works and tastes.

Re: Absinthe cocktails?

Yeah, SWIM just checked out a few local, "regular" liquor stores and didn't find any there. He will have to do some more extensive searching for sure. He may even have to have it special ordered..

And I can see the connection, but there actually wasn't any inspiration from Mr. Crowley for the drink. SWIM was actually a big fan of both drinks well before he decided to combine the two. It was out of a practical need to feel less drowsy from the alcohol (and a lack of REAL cocaine) that he decided to mix them.
