Purifying Heroin
[Editor's Note: The following text is taken from Heroin User's Handbook but the procedure has been floating around for years and I have no idea who "invented" it. I do not recommend using the part of this process that involves ether--unless you really know what you are doing The impurities found in street heroin range from coffee to quinine to glass particles. Most impurities, like coffee, are harmless. You might even like some of them. Coffee, for example, is tasted after injecting heroin that has been cut with it. Some impurities, like glass and maybe even quinine, can be deadly. I strongly encourage you to remove the impurities from the heroin you buy. What follows is a recipe that works despite the fact that it has been widely distributed on the Internet. <Removing Particulate Matter The use of cotton for filtration when heroin is cooked before being used is a small attempt at purifying the heroin ingested. But a much better job can be done with a little hydrochloric acid (HCl). Place about a gram of heroin in a small glass container (a test tube is best, but any glassware that will allow mixing will work). Add a couple of drops of 28% hydrochloric acid and allow it to react for a couple of minutes. Next, add 5 ml of distilled water and mix vigorously so that everything dissolves that can. At this point in the process, the heroin is in solution. The non-soluble material in the container is garbage that you do not wish to ingest. Let the solution sit so that the particulate matter settles to the bottom and then pipette out the solution, leaving the particulate matter behind. The simplest kind of pipette is an eye-dropper. If a pipette is not available, it is possible to pour the solution out of one container into another, being careful not to allow any of the particulate matter to be transferred. Removing Soluble Impurities Add ammonium hydroxide to the solution, one drop at a time. This will cause a white precipitate to form. Continue adding the ammonium until you are certain that there is no more precipitate being formed. The solution is then gently mixed to assure that the ammonium is evenly distributed. At this point, the solution will have a milky look. The solution is then added to about 100 ml of ethyl ether-a chemical with which great care must be taken, since it is quite combustible. This new solution is then vigorously mixed and left to sit. This will cause the water to settle at the bottom of the container; it is removed with a pipette and then discarded. A mixture of 5 mL of HCl and 5 mL distilled water is created and added to the ethyl ether mixture. This is stirred vigorously for several minutes. Afterwards, a water layer will form at the bottom of the container. You then pipette this out and into a small container such as a petri dish Deacidification Slowly add baking soda to the solution in the petri dish. This will cause the solution to bubble. When the bubbling stops, this process is finished. The resulting solution is then air-dried, which yields pure heroin and table salt (NaCl). The salt is harmless and may be ingested along with the heroin. by Dr. H © 2000 Last Modified: 5 January 2004 [i][Editor's Note: The following method for purifying street heroin comes to us from a once infamous clandestine heroin chemist who has "gone straight". He has asked to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. He also asked that we be very clear that this recipe explains a serious chemical process with the resulting risks: (1) accidents made during process could cause harm in the form of explosions, toxic vapors, and unknown other threats to the safety of the would-be chemist and those in close proximity; (2) even if performed exactly as written, this recipe will not increase the quantity, only the quality of what was already there; (3) the very act of using this recipe breaks drug manufacturing laws (along with many others besides) that can result in multi-year prison sentences and even death as punishment. The recipe is provided for educational purposes only--and as such, it will likely be quite useful to students of beginning organic chemistry.] I was curious about the procedure for cleaning street heroin [that is on your site: Purifying Heroin]. Most of my practical laboratory experience was with various opiates, street, pharmaceutical or self made, so this is definitely something that I know about. In fact I purified some street heroin for a friend of mine one day. It requires only a little knowledge of basic organic extraction technique. [B]This is what I did: Dissolve the street heroin in water. Use the easily available Hydrion pH papers to monitor the pH during this procedure. Add Sodium Hydroxide in solution dropwise while checking the pH. Use a narrow glass or plastic rod to touch a minimum of the drug solution to the paper to avoid loss. Stop when the pH reaches about 9. Extract with chloroform. Chloroform is far superior to diethyl ether in that it is non-flammable and does not present storage problems, where explosive peroxides can be formed. Note: Chloroform is an ideal solvent for heroin, codeine, and most other opiates, with the major exception of morphine which requires a mixed solvent. Separate the chloroform layer and wash with a minimum quantity of cold water: 1-2 ml works well. Evaporate the chloroform taking care not to burn the residue on the bottom of the beaker. Note: Chloroform is a known carcinogen, so plenty of ventilation (and a respirator) would be advisable. The chloroform is so volatile that this step is actually quite easy to perform. Add a dilute solution of HCl dropwise while stirring with a glass rod. Monitor the pH closely. As the acid is being added, the diacetyl morphine base is being neutralized and converted into the water-soluble hydrochloride salt form. When all the solid material has just dissolved, stop adding the HCl. I found that this takes place around pH 5-6. Note: If one tries to bring the pH all of the way up to 7, the free base alkaloid precipitates back out requiring addition of more HCl. The resulting solution will be in an injectable form; it will now be completely clear with no colored impurities or particulate matter. Having clarified this procedure, I would hope that nobody would actually attempt it. To an experienced chemist this is all so routine that you could do it blindfolded. But I noticed that even the college students in my Organic lab class, who had no prior organic chemistry experience, were remarkably clueless around a separatory funnel the first time. This is to say that what is trivial in the hands of an experienced chemist will likely be unusable (at best) and dangerous (at worst) in the hands of an amateur. I havent tried it, but I would assume there is a loss of 5 % that stick to the vessels, in filters and that stays in solutions. I think especially the ether / chloroform washs have to be done very exactly, maybe 3 washs instead of 1.Edited by: bogumil |

I just guessed the number . The procedure should remove everything and leave you with the pure diacetylmorphine/heroine.It can be done with 1/2 g. Only make sure you have small enough vessels, especially a small sep funnel. Big vessels are a pain in the ass because almost everything will stick to the walls. When you try, it would be cool if you would record the steps so we could compare later, becauseSWIM probably will try the procedure too, soon. Ok. SWIM performed the Procedure No.I with 0.5g of H. He had no ether so he used toluene instead. 1. added 5 drops of 28 HCl to the H in a very small vessel that can be closed. It started to smell like molded eggs - very gross. 2. Added 3ml dH2O and shaked it. Let it rest for 10 minutes. The solution was clear and darkbrown. No particulate matter fell out.Shaked it three times with5 ml toluene each time. Pipetted off the toluene, which hadgotten cloudy and taken a very light brown colour. Discarded the toluene. 3. Added ammonia hydroxide, 4 drops. Ech time a drop would hit the solution it would immediately form a thick ball of very darkmatter, which then sank to the ground. Shaked it. The matter dissolved partly the solution got greyish milky. 4. Shaked it with tolouene 5ml 3 times and kept the toluene. The toluene didnt seperate exactly this time, it would enclose little bubbles of water at the wall of the vessel. In the water layer, long hair like slimeyblack goo was floating around. Discarded the goo and water and kept the toluene. Let this evaporate now and report. SWIM didnt perorm it exactly as told, you can see. The reason for that was that he didnt have ether. So originally he only wanted to clean it with toluene. He decited later to perform the whole process. The first wash shouldnt have affected the rest. Im sure withether and apH paper i works great.Easy to perform even without sep funnel and a fast procedure too. Doesnt take more than 30 minutes to complete it. Now thatSWIM has seen what gross stuff is in the powder, he wonders ifhe wont do it regularly. It can be cut back to 50 % again with a clean cut like sugar (for snorting) afterwards. For injecting I wouldnt use sugar. Make sure that you have the following before you try the procedure: <UL> <LI>small vessel that can be closed</LI> <LI>a pipette which is slim enough to pipette from the vessel</LI> <LI>an eyedrop pipette to add dropwise HCl and ammonia</LI> <LI>chloroform or ether (chloro is definately preferred for both procedures)</LI> <LI>ammonia (ammonia hydroxide)</LI> <LI>HCl (25-28%)</LI> <LI>distilled water</LI> <LI>petry dish</LI> <LI>pH paper (cheapo, pH 6 and 9 need to be identified with some accuracy)</LI>[/list] Edited by: bogumil |

Heroin purification to nearly USP</font>

Quest [squest@moonwatcher.avrtech.com]</font> from alt.drugs, Wed May 18, 1994 [Erowid Note: We received an unconfirmed note saying that if this procedure were used on fentanyl or other synthetic "heroin substitutes", the resulting chemical would be dangerous to use. We are looking for verifying details.] This is as complete and as accurate as I can remember, it has been something like 9 years since I have used heroin. The process I used for purification was straight forward. Diacetylmorphine can exist in two forms, an insoluable base, or a soluable salt. Often it contained a plethera of other agents like pieces of broken glass, pieces of foil, dirt, wood, metal, mannitol, lactose, maltose, sand, you get the idea. The first stage of the process I used was to make sure the diacetylmorphine I received was totally converted to a soluable hydrochloride salt. The heroin I usually received was a brown powdered heroin, sometimes off white, very little vinegar smell. Today all you can find is a black crud that reeks with a vinegar (acetic) odor. The way I made sure it was a soluable salt was to drop enough 28% hydrochloric acid to make it wet. This insured that I would not waste any of the available drug, but would remove most if not all of the cut. I think that it would be better for me to detail it in a procedural manner. FYI, hydrochloric acid can be purchased in gallon jugs at hardware stores under the name Muriatic acid, 28%. First weigh out one gram of heroin from the stock you received from your supplier. Place this gram into a 13 x 100mm test tube. Add a few drops of 28% hydrochloric acid until it is evenly damp. Allow to react for a minute or two. Next add 5 ml distilled water, place your thumb over the end and carefully shake to dissolve all that will dissolve into the water. Allow the insoluables to settle. Using a pipette, remove and transfer as much of the liquid to a fresh test tube leaving the solids behind. Dispose of the undissolved remains in the first test tube. Slowly add via pipette, one drop at at time, ammonium hydroxide (water clear household ammonia) until the white precipitate ceases production. Add several more drops at this point just to be sure. Shake gently to be sure that all the solution is evenly ammoniated. The solution should look milky. Now add 100 ml ethyl ether (some kinds of diesel starting fluids, read the label) to a 150 ml beaker. Dump the milky liquid into the ether and stir briskly and allow the water to settle and collect on the bottom. The water will turn clear. Using a glass pipette, remove this water from the bottom of the beaker and dispose of. Now mix up a solution of 5ml 28% hydrochloric acid and 5ml distilled water and add this to the ether in the beaker. Stir briskly keeping as much acid/water suspended as possible for several minutes. Allow the water/acid to collect on the bottom of the beaker. Using a glass pipette, remove this water layer from the bottom of the ether and transfer to a glass petri dish. Transfer the ether back to its storage bottle for reuse. It will still contain small amounts of heroin base, so don't throw it out. Recycle! Slowly add small portions of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to the water/acid solution in the petri until you don't notice any more bubbles being formed. Place the glass on a warm surface, and allow to evaporate. The residue will be diacetylmorphine hydrochloride and salt. Table salt is a by-product of the reaction and will not hurt you at all when injected. Scrape up the residue and weigh it. Yield from one gram of smack (yea, we called it that) would be anything from 100 to 300 mg, rarely more. Place 100 mg of this powder in a test tube, add 10 cc sterile isotonic water for injection (available OTC at drug stores) and heat to boiling. Transfer this liquid while still hot using a syringe (available OTC at some drug stores) to a 10 ml rubber stoppered empty sterile ampoule (available OTC at drug stores). To use this drug which is 10mg/ml, extract with a sterile syringe as much drug as you wish to use. 10 mg would send me flying believe it or not. 2.5mg (1/4 cc) was usually enough to keep me "happy" and was my normal dose. 20mg was the most I could take safely in my opinion, and was a waste of drug and money. Normally, for most 150-170 lb males, 2.5 mg is more than enough in my opinion. Using heroin in this manner avoids the problems associated with "street use" and will keep your body healthy and safe, reducing the risk of disease and overdosage. My memory is pretty good, and I think I covered all the bases here, but I may have made a mistake somewhere. Overall I think this is an accurate method, to the best of my ability to remember. |

Starter fluid contains many other dangerous additives (Hexane Aliphatic Naptha (sp?) Etc.) Fractional distillation of the fluid would result in much cleaner ether. |

I dont use anything at all, because I never performed this. But someone told me that he heard that chloroform was used as non polar solvent. But ether or toluene could be used as well. Chloroform is by far the best: It takes the most heroin and it is "inflamable". It will form the layer on the bottom of the vessel. If no nonplar solvent is available the chemists use the first method, which works without. For that only hydrochloric acid and ammonium hydroxide are needed if one filters. But the NP wash is preffered. If one does procedure 1, then one would want to dilute the ammonia to maybe 5 percent or less, and shake it slightly after each drop of ammonia solutionto avoid the forming of that gross little ball.Edited by: bogumil |

Update: SWIM did the procdeure no. 1 (with HCL and ether) and said it works great. Some tips: - The ammonia is diluted like this: 5 drops 25% ammonia into 50 drops dH2O. - The ammonia is best added when the H-solution is in a small 50 ml-vessel on a magnetic stirrer. It turns white from one second to the other after a certain number of drops. Stirbar should then be stopped and it should be checked if another drop gives more precipitate or not. If yes, then stir again and so on until no more precipitate forms. If one lets it rest for some minutes the precipitate - completely white diacetylmorphin base - sinks to the bottom. - The ether washs should be collected and evaporated down - no titrating with HCl nessesary. Just turn the dried freebase into HCl with some drops of HCL in some dH2O later. - The product must be re-cut to 50%! One can overdose easily with the high percentage stuff! Noone should perform this though. Its illegal The above is only for theoretical interest.Edited by: bogumil |

hey guys SWIM wants to clean his dope too really bad dirty shit is
nasty =\ but ether is really hard to find and he got starting fluid but I heard that has oils in it and other shit thats bad for u and the water ether extraction wouldnt get all of it out, what can be used instead of ether or toulene cuz I dont know where to get toulene from eather, so plz let me kno what can be used maybe paint thinner or anything? and dH20 is distulled water correct? SWIM wants to try the purification procedure but need help = ] .. how much of the clean stuff should be injected ? .2 cc? or how many mm thanks guys! |

SWIM's friend has been using this technique, among many others (SWIM will ask him to share a few, put up a few posts) to purify his heroin for maybe around five years. He has always made sure to shoot pure product, and does not in any way have the 'junkie' appearance that many users have. He is certainly addicted, but has taken the precautions to use the purest H possible, so as to be careful with dosage and whatever else the dealer decides to throw in the bag. This friend is working a successful job, and has had minimal problems with his habit.
That's pretty much the only H success story that SWIM has ever seen for himself, so take all that with a grain of salt. |

Some questions:
Procedure No.1 should give a more pure final product than Procedure No.2 right? some questions for Procedure No.1: use of chloroform instead of diethyl ether cause it takes more heroin? bogumil wrote this. When adding HCl to heroin base/chloro mixture NaCl is been formed right? When i'm basing/deacidifying with baking soda/bicarb even more NaCL will be formed... How can I get rid of the NaCl? I don't want to have NaCL in my final product. In Procedure No.2 will also been NaCl formed in the final product? Can i stop after evaporating the chloroform and stay with the heroin base for smoking? Thank you in advance |

solutability of diacetyl morphine base. i found this:
1 gram diacetyl morphine base dissolves in: 1.5 ml Chloroform 100 ml diethylether 31 ml ethanol 1700ml H2O another page tells 1L H2O dissolves 0.2g heroin base and 1L ethanol dissolves 0,6g heroin base. melting point diacetyl morphine hcl 243-244 °C melting point diacetyl morphine base 173 °C One Site told the melting-point of pure diacetylmorphine hydrochloride is listed at 229-233°C. I hope these informations are correct. |

are there any other easier ways of purifying heroin? swim doesnt have access to these chemicals (swim has worked with them before but not aware of where to actually get them). if swim had access swim wouldnt definately try.

If SWIY can get 96%(192 proof) ethanol at the pharmacy, which SWIY most likely can, it can be used to dissolve the Heroin base while leaving out any tar. SWIM must ask for drinking quality ethanol though, don't buy denatured alcohol cause it contains toxic additives. SWIY will only use a small amount of ethanol, so a bottle of 100ml would be enough.
SWIM does not know if tar Heroin only contains Heroin as it's freebase, or if it contains Heroin as any salts as well, it could be that some of it is Heroin acetate(the salt of vinegar). If it is only Heroin base, than use 20ml per gram of tar Heroin to dissolve it in, let it stand for an hour and then filter it through a coffeefilter(like the one below). Anything left behind in the filter is crap which should be thrown away. Evaporate the alcohol by placing it in a small glass and put it in a water bath(pan filled with boiling water) Don't do this on a gas stove though! You can also evaporate the alcohol by placing it inside a small glass which is placed in a pan, and you can pour boiling water into the pan. Once the water has cooled, you can just pour it out and pour in some more boiling water. Because coffeefilters suck up a lot of moisture, using a big fillter will cause one to loose some dissolved Heroin because it's left behind in the filter. For that reason, one should do the following trick to make it smaller: - Use something like a cd, or something else which is round and has a flat surface, this can be placed on the filter to draw a perfectly round circle on it. - Cut the circle you've drawn out of the filter, you should end up with two circular pieces of coffeefilter the size of a cd. - Take one of the filters, and fold it double and press on the fold with some pressure so it stays folded, it should now look like half a circle. - Now fold it double again, and press on the fold to make shure it stays the way you folded it. You are now left with a quarter of a circle. - The filter you are now left with looks like a flat cone, by pulling one of the two outer layers and the layer next to it open, you've created your cone shape filter, made of much less filter paper instead of a whole coffeefilter, which saves a lot on filtering. It should look like this: ![]() If it does consist of some Heroin salt though, SWIY will be trouwing it away when performing the extraction I mentioned above. SWIY should much rather just go through the effort of an acid-base extraction, it gives nearly 100% yields when done right(which is not difficult to do right) and yields pure Heroin. |

In swims area of the country heroin is a light brown color and dissolves almost instantly on contact w/water. Does this heroin need 2 be purified? Swim imagions so, does anybody have a friend that has used methods of purification of this type of heroin? Any practical advise on purifying to people with no chemisty skills? If SWIY has no chemistry skills the best thing to do is to not purify it and just smoke it or snort it. If SWIY's heroin dissolves into water clearly (east coast?) without the addition of citric acid or heat, then slamming it may be an option; never, never slam tar as it is very bad for veins.

Whilst swim hasn't touched a test tube since secondary school he thinks that the above process looks not too complicated and is going to have a go. His old chemistry teacher Mr Dolan would be very proud of him!!!
However there is one thing that swim is not too sure about? Can swim smoke the purified heroin? If not how would swim convert it to smokeable heroin? |
