Mulberry extract?
Unripe mulberries and leaves of the white mulberry tree contain a piperidine alkaloid called 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) that is thought to be the alkaloid that causes hallucinations after ingestion. Here's some copypasta:
Researchers in Japan have isolated the active ingredient in white mulberry leaves 1-deoxynojirimycin that is found to strongly inhibit the intestinal metabolism of disaccharides (especially sucrose), thereby restricting by up to 50% the amounts of sugar entering the circulation. They have also found that mulberry extract before carbohydrate rich meals significantly suppresses the normal postprandial (after-meal) rise in blood glucose levels. Here's some copypasta from erowid: 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), a polyhydroxylated piperidine, is a potent a-glycosidase inhibitor and is abundant in Morus spp. (mulberry trees) leaves and roots. Nowadays, M. alba leaves and dried Bombyx mori (silkworm) powder are taken as healthy foods in Korea. A simple method for the assay of DNJ was established and seasonal change of DNJ content in M. alba leaves was determined using the method. The method includes simple hot-water extraction, derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate and reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Optimal conditions for extraction and derivatization are described. For the stability of FMOC-derivative of DNJ, it was essential to dilute derivatization mixture with 0.1% acetic acid and to operate at 4¡É. The seasonal change of DNJ content in M. alba leaves seemed considerately related to that of temperature. It would make sense if DNJ was an alkaloid that causes hallucinations, since it's a piperidine. Since there is only one experience report on erowid on mulberry, SWIM will buy some DNJ and try it. Re: Mulberry extract?
I have some dried mulberries from Iran. As a matter of fact, I just ate some! Can I get high from them? :S

Re: Mulberry extract?
Only if they're unripe, and in rather big amounts, so no.

Re: Mulberry extract?
So...what does SWIY think? SWIM is going to make a tea out of the leaves first since there's a mulberry tree nearby, and hopefully get high. Wish SWIM luck.

Re: Mulberry extract?
SWIM just drank tea made of 7 leaves. Although SWIM is almost sure it's a morus alba, it might not be.
DaveDaPsychonaut added 200 Minutes and 48 Seconds later... Didn't feel shit, it wasn't the right tree. Last edited by DaveDaPsychonaut; 09-09-2009 at 02:27. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Re: Mulberry extract?
Alright, SWIM is chewing and swallowing a bunch of leaves (definetly mulberry this time), and SWIM feels stimulated. SWIM's eyes are wide open. No physical effects are felt and no visual effects are seen so far. SWIM probably needs to make a tea or use more leaves for stronger effects. SWIM likes the stimulation though, it makes him rather more productive than he would have been. Thoughts are rather unprocessed, so that makes for creativity. Handwriting is bigger, neater (SWIM is a crappy handwriter), and SWIM thinks it's faster.
DaveDaPsychonaut added 1266 Minutes and 56 Seconds later... SWIM made a tea out of 7 leaves and didn't feel much (If anything). SWIM now concludes that mulberry leaves don't contain enough DNJ, so the only ways to acquire intensity are eating high amounts of unripe mulberries and taking a currently unknown amount of mulberry leaf extract which is sold at several websites, mostly UK and canadian sites.
