Is Klonipin (Clonazepam) as addictive as other benzos?

SWIM was prescribed Clonezepam for SEVERE insomnia and is scared sheetliss hearing valium and Xanax horror WD stories. In the scheme of things how addictive is it. Swim has taken alprolozam and noticed the benzo blitz associated with it but with Klonis has had no noticable adverse reactions...yet... Any input????

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

In SWIM's experience yes. All benzo's have the potential for both mental and physical addiction. SWIM is unsure whether some are more addictive than others. He would guess that for the most part they are all pretty much equally addictive. If they are NOT all equally addictive than SWIM would make another guess that Clonazepam would be one of the more addictive ones, maybe second in line to Alprazolam.

If SWIY is scared he should play definitely it safe and take them as prescribed. Abuse would only increase the risk and intensity of addiction.

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

SWIM has had to take 7 to 10 diphenhydramine/benedryl every night for many years but that soon wouldn't work anymore. SWIM suffers from extreme chronic sleep disorder so if Kpins are a solution he has to live with it. Not sleeping for weeks on end is not an option in his life. Even after one night without sleep swim is fucked for the whole next day. Alprolazam is good only for about two hours and then he is wide awake again. SWIMs doc even considered Phenobarbitol as a last resort but is familiar with swims addictive "qualities"

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

Swim read that in the UK they are more likely to prescribe clonazepam (klonopin) Than diazepam as its less addictive and abusable. (not sure if this is true, read it on this forum)

Swim gets diazepam but doesn't use it regularly, to avoid addiction !
He also gets zopiclone he uses that more often, he works shifts including nights and needs his sleep !

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

Some benzos are more addictive than others. I don't know about clonazepam specifically, but the benzo it is derived from, nitrazepam, is considered to have a very high abuse potential - whatever that may mean.

But benzos with longer half-lives (such as clonazepam, which is active in the body for usually close to two days or more) are often prescribed because there is a lowered chance of developing a tolerance and addiction if the level in your bloodstream fluctuates less. You go off drugs and back on again repeatedly, your body gets a chance to "miss" them.

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

SWIM has had trouble sleeping for 10 years or so. Sleep apnea may be a possibility but doubt it. Although my girl says I snore sometimes. With the K-pins I have been getting 12 hours of sleep every night and feel energized every day now so I guess it can be considered a good thing. THX Betsym! I have only started taking benzos within the last few weeks though.

yes, it is, at least to those who feel positive effects when using it recreational. and to those who get used to it by using it as a sleeping aid on a regular scheme, means daily.
SWIM could say the question also could be "Is Klonipin as seductive as other benzos?"
see, it differs, one get's addicted from Lorazepam, the other gets addicted from Clonazepam, because each one likes the individual effects of the substance.

physical dependence, once built, is the same.

Quite true Betsym. They are also indicated for anxiety every twelve hours. SWIM admits he took five today and zonked for about 4 hours and really enjoyed the rest. But will attempt to sleep with nothing and see how that goes later tonight.

jakelta, u say klonpin is not prescribed often in the uk for epilepsy? this surprises swim cause in the states it is THE GO TO BENZO. at least thats swim expierience. they dnt like alprazalom cause its too addictive, they jsut dont deal with diazepam often, (dk y) and think lorazepam is too sedating. but clonazepam is thier favortite (hes talkign psychiatrsts here)

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

Xanax is very slutty b-cauz of it's short half life and ma-b other reasons. Valium is diazepam.. SWIM is just using the non generic names cause they are shorter and more widely known. SWIM has had lorazepam and found it very seductive too. K-pin is being experimented with at the moment and is greatly being enjoyed because of it's ability to knock SWIM out. The extreme insomnia is dessamated by a few tabs which brings great relief rather than poppin 15 dyphenhydramine "Benedryl" Thanks guys!

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

This Swim has never been much of a benzo lover and has taken xanx and klonopin and never had withdrawl. But swim has never taken them daily but large quanities (like 20 pills for a party, which wasn't even fun, jsut a unrememberd night...) and has neevr withdrawed.

Klonopin seems a lot tamer to me compared to xanax in swims opinion. Swim likes it more bc xanax makes swim not remeber a thing and act weird. But Swim has no clue has no clue y swim doesn't suffer from withdrawl, maybe bc swim has never done trhem daily

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

I have been on many different benzos and never had any real withdrawals at all, when I decided they were no longer doing me any good, due to huge tolerance. Least of which, Klonopin. I took more than 20mg of Valium a day for over a year, and had no problem quitting them. I have quit clonos many times over the years and have never noticed any withdrawals, at all. I've been on them for a few years now, and have stopped taking them for weeks at a time, with no noticeable symptoms. I think benzo withdrawals are highly exaggerated. Or is it just me?

Re: Is Klonipin as addictive as other benzos

SWIM will chime in here, and after having experience with many different benzos, clonazepam is the one that she takes least, aside from chordiazpoxide which SWIM can't remember the last time she even opened the bottle... and even then it was only too count to make sure all 113 were still there LOL. Clonazepam is taken only occasionally, although it is prescribed up to 1mg x3 daily... SWIM has several different types of benzos lying around and temazepam was the only one that ever caused craving. This was no longer a problem once anxiety was effectively treated and temazepam is still prescribed and used less now then ever by SWIM. SWIM still has 2 refills on each bottle and is about to see the dr...

SWIM is going to request something different... SWIM can take large doses of alprazolam and function totally fine, but if she starts taking her clonazepam 1mg x3 daily the build up leads to benzo effects at unwanted times. Evenings, or social events are really the only times SWIM wants benzo effects, with the exception of daytime anxiety which is not overly common. Alprazolam would seem ideal for SWIM if not for too much amnesia.

To answer the original question posed in the thread, SWIM knows people who are prescribed the same dose as her of clonazepam (1mg x3 daily) and do take... actually maybe only 2.5mg, but still say that he feels a bit edgy in the morning before taking the mornng dose. Taken occasionally it shoudl pose no dependance liability, however addiction liability depends on the person.

She said no. And i can confirm that in Portugal it is only used for epileptic diseases, i think that is in common in Europe.
The only zone of the world that i know that clonazepam is prescribed as anti anxiety medication is the US and South America.

I would have to say clonazepam has a higher abuse potential in contrast to alprazolam, strictly in terms of euphoric content.

Re: Is Klonipin (Clonazepam) as addictive as other benzos?

Euphoria?? SWIeche05?? Klonipin really hasn't given SWIM any addictive type feelings. SWIM uses it for his extreme sleep disorder. SWIM believes that the Methastone he took for 9 months did some permanent damage to his brain's sleep system. If swim did not use it he would only sleep a few hours a week. Unless I get some good wave 4 or REM sleep EACH night I am fucked for work or anything but sitting on the sofa.

Re: Is Klonipin (Clonazepam) as addictive as other benzos?

Swim would say that in his opinion no, because swim doesn't tend to redose often with clonazepam since it lasts longer than most other benzos. With Valium or Xanax the effects are mostly gone quickly and after a bit every 4 hours you get cravings which won't help with keeping a low tolerance level and preventing fixations.

With clonazepam the effect lasts longer, and if swiy sticks to taking 1 every other day, or 2 days on it and then 2 off, or so *like some have recommended above* swiy probably won't develop neither a fixation nor tolerance and will sleep half of the nights like a baby ... the others swiy will have a bit time on his hands heheh... Swim isn't saying they are not addictive, but just thinks they are less likely to become addicted when used sporadically.

Oh, and this way, on special occasions swiy would have enough klono's to recreationally enjoy them!

Re: Is Klonipin (Clonazepam) as addictive as other benzos?

In the case of SWIM's marmoset clonazepam is the one always laying around, and used in situations where there is the desire to alleviate physical anxiety without compromising mental ability is present. However, some people seem to prefer clonazepam. SWIM is unsure of whether this is because clonazepam is just prescribed more often, or if there are just individual differences between people. SWIM's marmoset also states that with clonazepam you can count on a good 6-8 hours of anxiety relief.

SWIM has observed recovering alcoholics and such who state that it causes marked dependancy and after regular use. For example, one individual who is prescribed 1mg x3 daily will take it everyday, 3 times a day, but often cut a pill in half so only 2.5mg total daily consumption. Upon waking, he stated that he definitely feels edgy until taking his morning dose. This was someone several years older than SWIM.

It is probably important, especially with benzos to realize the difference between addiction and dependancy. Benzos are especially sneaky because they can cause one to become dependant without really seeming "addictive" For example, a person might take alprazolam fairly regularly for maybe several months and not find any discomfort upon cessation, and feel that they are relatively harmless. Then find a few months later, anxiety becoming more and more common to the point where it occurs everyday and is stopped upon administration of a benzo. Thus a strong dependancy develops without the person really realizing it until it has already taken a deep root.

This said, some people might crave them and become addicted long before any significant dependancy develops. They might never develop a real dependancy, especially if they are the sort that get prescriptions and take all their pills in 3 days and go the remaining month with nothing. (That is certainly not a recommendation haha)

Post Quality Evaluations:
Good clarification.

Re: Is Klonipin (Clonazepam) as addictive as other benzos?

SWIM still takes 1mg before attempting sleep and will then be awake in 4-5 hours and takes another 1mg to complete the nights rest cycle. No noticeable side effects or euphoria at all, just the ability to rest. The second half of the night will bring REM and dreams so when that happens SWIM knows he got good sleep. SWIM has extreme sleep disorder and used to take literally handfuls of diphenhydramine/benadryl before he mentioned this to his doc. Doc says diphenhydramine fucks up ur liver in large doses.

SWIM would have to say that clonazepam would test return positive for a drug test that included benzos. Never really heard of any typical benzo that would not show up if benzos were tested for. With that said, there may be some exceptions... not really sure what they would be if there are some. There are many different benzos, however a great deal of them are broken down into varying amounts of the same active metabolites (not all, but a lot).
