Variation in OTC strength?

Recently Swim has been experiementing with over-the-counter Codeine 8mg/ Par 500mg... he usually does a CWE of around 36 caplets or tablets depending on source.
Swim is quite partial and somewhat dependant on the euphoric feelings that this combination can give , as such his tolerance is quite high However after 3 days strait use, Swim took around 280mg of codeine in solution and was blown away. The effects were very strong, climaxing in the ever searched for ‘Nod’.
Swim was wondering why even though his constant use in the prior 72 hours, the effects were so profound?
