Purifying cocaine by making it into crack?

I have almost no knowledge of chemistry, so please excuse me if this is extremely dumb. Anyway, my thought was: if someone wanted to purify their product, they could make it into crack and then turn it into HCl again. I have read that the latter is possible, though I don't know how trustworthy the source.

It seems easier than the whole acid/base extraction, but I don't know if it would actually work (and would never try 'cause it's illegal).
