Per capita, New Zealand is the 24th heaviest drinking country in the world – 11 places ahead of our neighbours Australia. Australia has discovered that many of their inhabitants have brain damage from drinking, so the odds don’t look good for us. The Aussie researchers calculate that 800,000 New Zealanders are drinking at hazardous levels.
60 Minutes’ Sarah Hall talks to the scientists, to regular drinkers and to those who have drunk too much. She even has an MRI scan to see what alcohol might have done to her brain. A story that might make you think twice about that wee tipple after work.
