Richard Alpert's LSD impregnated suit: myth or fact?
I've heard a couple of references to an incident in the 1960s when Dr Richard Alpert (AKA Baba Ram Dass) was smuggling liquid LSD in his suitcase. The story says that the bottle broke, and the LSD soaked into his suit. When he arrived, and it was realised what happened, the suit was frozen and kept as a sort of huge blotter. For years afterwards, when someone wanted to trip, they would cut off a piece of the suit and suck it.
I've not been able to find any definitive account for this on the net, and it has many of the hallmarks of a myth. Probably the best source I've heard is Ken Kesey, who was featured in the BBC documentary "The Beyond Within". In this he said:
"They even gave us a piece of Baba Ram Dass', Dick Alpert's, famous suit. Did you ever hear of that story?
He was bringing across a pint of LSD in his suitcase, and it got broken in the airport and his suit soaked it up. So they took his suit and put it in the deep-freeze, and for some years whenever they wanted to get high they would cut off a little piece of the suit."
Does anyone know if this is a true story, or have any more information on it?
