A question about the creation of trazodone?

Swim and his friend were sitting around talking yesterday and we got on the topic of various things doctors had given us for sleep.Swims friend said trazodone was created from experiments with piperazines,that it was derived from a very basic piperazine.Swims friend is known for not getting his information all the way correct.Is there any truth to this?
