Drug seizure no child's play

Monday, 29 May 2006

Customs and Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers have uncovered an unusual attempt to import cannabis resin concealed as children’s play dough.
Customs officers at Melbourne Airport were conducting air cargo examinations on May 23 2006 when they opened a package after an x-ray image identified anomalies with the contents.
The package, posted from India, was declared as “baby toys” and contained two tubs of children’s play dough.
On closer examination, the tubs were found to contain a dark resinous substance that initially tested positive for cannabis.
Customs officers identified and intercepted a second package on May 24 which was also found to contain two tubs of children’s play dough. The tubs contained a similar quantity of the dark resinous substance and also tested positive for cannabis.
Australian Federal Police agents initiated an investigation which resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old man from Caulfield, Melbourne.
AFP forensics confirmed that the tubs contained a total of 305 grams of cannabis.
The man was charged with two counts to aid, abet counsel or procure in the importation of a substance being a border controlled drug, namely cannabis resin, contrary to subsections 11.2(1) and 307.2(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The man was also charged with two counts of attempting to possess a border-controlled drug, namely cannabis resin contrary to sub sections 11.1(1) and 307.6 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 and one count of possessing a border-controlled drug namely cannabis resin contrary to subsection 307.6 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The man has been bailed and is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on 21 August 2006.
