Buspirone in Canada?

Is Buspirone HCL, the active ingredient in Buspar Ansial etc., available OTC in Canada? This question is aimed at fellow Canadian SWIYs. It supposedly relieves anxiety without the negative effects of benzos.

Re: Buspirone in Canada?

swim is in the unites states and swim was prescribed brand name buspar. which is buspirone hcl. he felt it was weird and dysphoric. it sorta relived his anxiety by putting him in a stupor and not a fun one. nothing like a benzo. benzos worke better for swims anxeity and recreational value. to him buspar has no recreational value. oh and swim has also been on the benzos lorazepam, clonazepam, alprazolam XR, and diazepam for his anxiety so he has good reference points.

Re: Buspirone in Canada?

SWIM would not be looking for rec effects on it so it may be worth a try. SWIM also heard that it is OTC and was hoping SWIY would know.

Re: Buspirone in Canada?

SWIM tried very hard to follow the doctors instructions and take buspirone for the necessary period of time. Avoiding the negative side-effects of benzos?!?! SWIM was determined to give it a try and do what the dr. said instead of self-medicating... Well, the only way SWIM could tolerate the side-effects from the buspirone was to basically sedate herself with benzos. A month or two they told SWIM it would take to reach its max, therapeutic levels in the system... SWIM tried, but was not able to make it much longer than 5-6 weeks. Even by then, the medication was not tolerated at the prescribed dosage. SWIM was told it has no side-effects and SWIM must have one screwed up body because it actually triggered anxiety attacks. Thankfully, SWIM gets proper medication that may be addictive, but is so much better than buspirone. Bad memories... Thank goddness they realized finally that they had tried every possible SSRI / SNRI (some more than once) and realized SWIM really only reacts well to benzos.

Now with that said, SWIM ended up going to a psychiatrist who is very intelligent. Instead of giving SWIM some slightly different version of the same drug, he gave SWIM drugs like hydroxyzine, propranolol, and a couple other non-controlled substances to try for the purpose of replacing benzos when desired. A lot of dr.s overlook stuff like that.

Don't go beating yourself up. I took Buspirone for about 7 months last year and had noticable side-effects from day 1. Tingling in my arms and face (more like electrical pulses then and enjoyable "tingle," really), lightheaded/dizzy (not in a fun way), panic attacks, loss of appetite.

Found that smoking pot would increase the likelyhood of a panic attack. Spoke with my doctor about all of this (except the weed) and was prescribed Valium in combination with the busiprone. As I have a very high tolerance to benzos, I would take 40-60mg shortly after my morning dose of Busiprone and found the side-effects were greatly reduced.

To come back around to the topic: As far as I can tell, Buspirone (which has been around since the early 80's) is available OTC in Canada. Seriously though, with all the fun stuff out there, why are we talking about Busiprone?
