Salvia Learning Curve and Banning In South Dakota

A new entry has been added to File Archive

Description:
Fast-tracking the new state law banning the herb Salvia divinorum has left South Dakota law enforcement playing catch up. The emergency law, signed by Governor Rounds on Wednesday, goes into effect right away, instead of the usual July 1 startup.

South Dakota lawmakers felt Salvia divinorum was such a danger because of its hallucinogen effects, they wanted the ban to take effect immediately. That means state's attorneys offices are getting up-to-speed on how they'll handle arrests and prosecutions of the now-illegal drug.

Routine traffic stops will likely yield arrests of people possessing the LSD-like drug Salvia divinorum.

"I would assume that the hallucinogen properties of this drug that it would be easily recognized by our officers in the field," Minnehaha County State's Attorney Aaron McGowan said.

Umm...does he think it comes in tie-dye colors or something? Why would it's "hallucinogenic properties" make it easily recognizable?

Damn police types!

Ugh.
Police are getting stupider and stupider every day. I love how they show a prison cell at the end. It's SALVIA not heroin. Jesus...
