i've come across some newspaper ads looking for users to participate in these studies. Are these on the level ? Does anyone know somebody who's participated in one of these studies ? What goes on ?

50-50 chance it's valid. Reminds SWIM of ads for "Unclaimed Money" the state used to run to lure folks in that had warrants.

Give them a call and ask about the company doing the trials. A quick google will let you know if they are legit. SWIM remembers they had meth dosing tests done in australia a while back, he was reluctant to call, thinking it was some kind of government trap to catch meth heads...

he later found out they all were dosed up, paid for it (can you believe) and had the time of their lives...

In Baltimore where SWIM lives Johns Hopkins hospital and the National Institute of Drug Abuse conduct these studies on a very regular basis and they pay very well too. SWIM was once in a detox center at Hopkins and called a flier for one of these studies and was told to come in for a second interview in which would be a few hours long and he would be compensated for his time. He never did make it to the appointment. Make sure that you do a little research on the company or organization conducting the study. If they are affiliated with NIDA, a Pharmaceuticals Company or a hospital it is most likely legit. Hopkins' studies can range from a study on new "stop smoking medications" to studies on the effects of various drugs on the body the most popular being Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, Marijuana etc... They even have studies to research the effects that different drugs have on people with various illnesses such as diabetes, Hep., H.I.V./AIDS, High Blood Pressure etc.. They can take anywhere from a week or two all the way up to months and years and they pay the person volunteering anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a several thousand depending on how long the person is needed. SWIM knows and bunch of people who have participated in these studies and even a few who supported their habits for a good while because of these. Really its getting paid to use drugs or getting paid to take something like Suboxone and letting some Doctors and Scientists watch you all day!

As long as SWIY doesn't have any illegal substances on their person or warrents when they show up, they're not breaking any laws by admitting they use crack or trying to participate in a controlled government funded scientific study.
