Alternatives to picking skin/scalp

SWIM cannot resist the urge to pick at his scalp while he his busy studying/reading (the purpose of his amphetamine use). Obviously, amphetamine usage can result in the annoying side effect of repetitive skin or scalp picking and swim was curious if any other users have developed an alternative to this. Swim will think to himself... "No matter what, do not pick at your scalp, no matter how fierce the urge is..." but herein lies the problem... it seems involuntary. Swim just finds himself in the middle of scratching his scalp and wondering why or when he even started. Swim also needs to focus on other important things and cannot waste time constantly reminding himself to not pick at his scalp.

Anyways, any ideas on how to overcome this nasty habit? Swim was considering using one of those devices that improves grip strength while on amphetamine medication, but also thinks that he will get tired (or end up hurting the tendons/muscles in his forearms instead) and is out of other ideas.

Re: Alternatives to picking skin/scalp

The picking is simply a drug-induced psychological tick. It may be difficult at first to stop the habit... but if one can find a suitable substitution it may be able to distract one from the skin picking.

Gum and pen chewing are great suggestions, because they also help to stop the involuntary teeth grinding (which can result in decay)!

Re: Alternatives to picking skin/scalp

SWIM just listens to some music, and sits back and chills out. try to catch yourself doing the ticks now and then too, every now and then just think, "am i doing it again?" that helps SWIM do it less, personally.

Re: Alternatives to picking skin/scalp

swim gets some drymouth, so he's constantly licking his teeth. but a healthier subsitute would work, like gum or a pen. Swim suggests something like sillyputty or playdough, or a stressball. Just keep your hands busy.
