Quality of Sleep...Phenibut vs GHB vs Nothing

Swim understands that GHB has the dopamine rebound which causes you to wake up 4 hours into the sleep. Swim also understands that some users report grogginess with Phenibut.

Swim wants to know how people would rate the quality of sleep of phenibut vs GHB vs their normal sleep cycle.

Re: Quality of Sleep...Phenibut vs GHB vs Nothing

Swim has absolutely observed grogginess from any dose above 500mg of phenibut. 250mg, however, has been ideal for swim in providing pleasant and uninterrupted sleep with great mornings to follow.

I've read (but unfortunately can't find the article) that phenibut promotes alpha wave activity the day after a phenibut-aided sleep - this being one of the major reasons phenibut is touted as a healthy supplement. Swim can attest to this; the day after a 250mg administration, swim jumps right out of bed in a great mood so long as 7+ hours of sleep were achieved. If, however, fewer than 7 hours are achieved, significant grogginess and mental 'cloudiness' are definitely present. Waking up becomes a real challenge. I suppose it's all about finding the appropriate dose for your body. I'd be wary of habitual use, however, as I've heard that dependencies on phenibut are quite unpleasant.

Swim therefore sticks to using phenibut on weekends, or days without morning responsibilities, to take advantage of the fact that there is no alarm set. Swim prefers phenibut-aided sleep over normal sleep cycles, but unfortunately doesn't have the luxury of assuring 7+ hours of sleep every night.

I'd be interested to know how phenibut affects sleep-cycle patterns - it may be counter-productive if it inhibits REM sleep, for example.

Thanks for sharing SWIY's experience. Age and weight would be useful to know.

KaizenLifeImprove should urgently read the rules.

Rule #1:

Do NOT use GHB for sleep.

Before SWIY know it you take 1 extra dose before sleep. And after that you take a dose in the morning 'to get you started'. Just dont.

Re: Quality of Sleep...Phenibut vs GHB vs Nothing

Hmm - I'm pretty sure GHB (under the name xyrem) has been prescribed to treat some rare-ish sleep disorders and narcolepsy/catalepsy.

KaizenLifeImprove: I've never heard of such a rule. If anything, the rule would be to take care not to abuse the compound due to it's addictive profile. If the rule is to never use the compound for sleep, are you suggesting that it's only good for sporadic recreation? It seems to me that placing such broad generalizations on most compounds is lazy. Self-control is key with this compound.

Milk Man,

The likelihood that you suffer from one of these conditions is low. GHB would not be ideal in supporting or enhancing sleep in a neurotypical individual, due, as you said, to the biphasic effects upon dopamine release. Phenibut is likely more appropriate for the effects you're seeking, though not for nightly use. Melatonin/5-HTP (without magnesium additives) may be a suitable combination for nightly sleep enhancement.

Re: Quality of Sleep...Phenibut vs GHB vs Nothing

Kaizen, Xyrem (GHB) is prescribed as a, twice nightly, sleep aid.

That is its mode of action. The very reason it is applicable in treating certain medical conditions.

Gradient is absolutely right, if you have an issue with GHB addiction then, by all means, feel free to discuss it in an appropriate thread.

Xyrem, when used appropriately (4.5g x 2), has been proven to be entirely non-addictive, nor does it cause *any* withdrawal issues of note when ceased abruptly after long-term (+44months) administration of these night doses.
