Talking codeine for swims dog,arthuritus

swims dog (proper dog, kanine) has reumateud athuritus. Swim cant afford the vets prices.....so swim has been experimenting on his self with cold water extracted codeine (thank you for the tips and tricks people of this amazing forum). Pretty much got it down to a t...

Could someone please give swim some advice....his dog is over 12 years old. Its a similar size to a colly, swim will get her weighed to find out body weight.

she'll only be alive for a couple more years, and swim wants her to have a peaceful retirement. due to her age, it doesnt really matter if she gets hooked, but swim will try to use it as little as possible.

Swim also has alot of methadone, he legally owns it. He didnt tell the clinic that he was reducing, just so swim has a stash for the upcoming years 2012, nasa say 2008 - 2015 (mayans were quite accurate. And the upcoming world wars....so swim is ready for the supply of methadone, opiates to dry up. He has enough to do a steady reduction, if such events happen.

Swim would prefer to use codeine/water as it doent contain the shit methadone contains.

If there is a better way to help my dog i'd appreciate any advice...swims dog is like his daughter and his best friend....swim got very clinically depressed when she got to 8 years, but he's excepted death now and he hopes to meet her on the other side and hunt devil spirits in the under/over world in that magic playground

merry xmas all d-f members,,,,,its a great comunity and dont think swim would of stayed off of heroin without some of u guys,,,during his early days of semi cleaness you gave him hope and i hope his hope was passed on

party on cowboys and cowgirls...peace love and equality

S.x

Re: codeine for swims dog,arthuritus

Hi swiy-double..

the only thing comming to swims mind is dogs have a naturally fast heart rate 2x that of humans? and codiene speeds up the heart further? is codiene considerd safe for dogs?

a freinds dog died of cancer last year, the vet prescribed tramadol and through the coarse of treatment never left tramadol for another opiate,
swim doesnt know if this was just the vets Choice of treatment, or if there were reasons to not use codiene / opiates.

anyway only some thoughts there, good luck finding the proper pain releif for your loved one

Re: codeine for swims dog,arthuritus

Codeine is used frequently in veterinary medicine and is quite safe for use in dogs,Provided the dog can safely take codeine.
What swi-me means is your dog could well have some underlying problem that you are not aware of.
However the Codeine dosage used by vets is around 1-2mg per kg of the dogs body weight every 12hrs.
Dogs can tolerate some amounts of Asprin (10mg/lb @ 12hrs) and paracetamol*(25mg/lb @ 8hrs)
Ibuprofen is not safe for use in dogs and can cause ulcers.
Treat your dogs ailments just like you would your own ~ Try and massage the sore elbows, legs e.t.c also using a warm pack pressed to the area may offer some relief.
A vets visit would be best,if the money can be found?
Good luck.Q

Paracetamol**There is a lot of controversy over how well this medication works in dogs. Most veterinary pharmacologists seem to suspect that it doesn't work at all.

Re: codeine for swims dog,arthuritus

the biggest problem with opiates in dogs is that it can increase the stress on the kidneys in an older animal, thus shortening life. plus self medicating her you could make an error. if your dog has pain sometimes a short course of steroids is better but you must get them from a vet. if it is a bone/ joint issue you can use glucosamine and it is very effective in swims experience. but if it is definately diagnosed as rheumatoid then that is an immune disease and immune suppressants such as steroids are usually given. please make sure you have had the condition diagnosed by a vet because rheumatoid requires diff treatment to wear and tear arthritis

if you are on a low income you can take your dog to the pdsa for free ( you can give a small donation to them afterwards, your choice how much ). pain killers from a vet are not that much money, i treat my older dog ( large dog ) for just 7 quid a month through the ordinary vets ( not pdsa )

please consider at least one consultation for your dog, it costs about 12 quid here which is not a lot of money. if you love her as much as you say you do please consider what i have said above? try the pdsa.

you could end up killing your dog by error and that would be heartbreaking. please see a vet? if you want help accessing the pdsa then pm me.

ps jon is right.. heat pads and massage are an older dogs friend...
