East Chicago police officer faces drug charge

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. - Federal agents say an East Chicago police officer was arrested attempting to buy $60,000 worth of cocaine from a police informant.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says 47-year-old Xavier Herrera was recorded on videotape attempting to buy three kilograms of the drug in a fast food restaurant parking lot in the Chicago suburb of Summit, Ill.

Authorities say Herrera and two others are being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago pending a detention hearing Wednesday. The DEA says Herrera waived his right to a lawyer and signed a statement admitting his role.

The East Chicago police chief says he will request that Herrera be placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.

Jesus, what a mofo. The hypocrisy of it! With Chicago PD's tough drug law, and the fact that 3 ks ain't no bag of personal.

I hope the court makes an example out of him, sadly, that seems unlikely.

Like, administrative leave? Shouldn't he be sitting in the pen? Did he have to pay bail? What nasty shiz.

SWIM used to buy weed from a copper. This guy wasn't a hypocrite, or a crooked gang-banging Vic Mackay character, he was just an average guy with an average day job, trying to supplement the pittance he got paid with a little bit of extra curricular work - just like most of the dealers SWIM has dealt with.

Obviously coke is a slightly different matter, but I'd still be inclined to say that this guy doesn't deserve to be made an example out of any more (or less) than any other dealer.
