Cracker or Whipper / Dispenser
SWIM's read quite a few threads in this forum, but hasn't really seen anyone outline whether or not it's better to use a whole nitrous whipper or a small handheld cracker (Which also appears to be a bike tire inflator).
Are there any advantages to either? SWIM has seen an automatic bike inflator which uses 16g air cartridges. Would it be safe to attach a balloon for use? Are the crackers dangerous even if they're 100% metal? SWIM doesnt want a highly pressurised charger exploding or hitting SWIM! TIA |

Re: Cracker or Whipper / Dispenser
Cream dispensers have to comply to safety regulations, as do tyre inflator, but some crackers SWIM recently saw sold as salt shakers would not. That is not to say that "salt shaker" crackers would blow up, but their production would not be regulated.
As long as SWIY does not double charge a dispenser they should be at no risk. Using a balloon in combination with a cracker/dispenser is the best way, safest way and always the better option and many would agree provides a better experience. Bike tyre inflators and similar are convenient to carry about due to their size, but they get colder than the cream dispenser type, nitrous crackers (usually shorter than the tyre inflators and made from anodised aluminium) get extremely cold on the outside ofter causing frost to form and can easily cause frost burns. The cream dispenser type are bulkier and so less convenient to travel with, but do not get as cold so issues of hand freezing etc are much reduced. There has been some concern over lubricant oil added to nitrous chargers, if SWIY is worried about this the cream dispenser type would significantly reduce and oil SWIY may otherwise ingest. Re: Cracker or Whipper / Dispenser
Maybe SWIM will just cough up and get a whole dispenser. SWIM assumes when you say double charger a dispenser you mean use two or more chargers without letting any nitrous out. Could you do this with the bigger 1 litre dispensers or is it still not recommended?
Are plastic dispensers susceptible to cracking after a while? Is it worth just paying a bit more for a decent metal one in the first place? Thanks for the help, SWIM says he'll almost certainly be getting some N2O asap! |

SWIM would imagine double or triple charging would be safer with a 1l dispense as the internal pressure and stress on the dispenser would not be so great. The dispensers are usually made up of an aluminium body with a mainly plastic head, SWIMs friends who bought such dispensers 2 years ago (and have seen much use probably upward of 1500 each) now each have had to replace them due to cracks in the plastic head piece, SWIM imagines if a dispenser with a metal head piece was bought it would survive better. If SWIY was referring to the mainly plastic bike tyre inflators, SWIM cannot pass opinion as he has never used them. more nitrous asap is always the way forward! Enjoy! Peace Geezman |
