Ambien (Zolpidem) and other things...sleeping issues

I am having sort of a problem sleeping on a "normal" schedule.
It's easy to deal with currently as a college student working evengings
in the food service industry but I am concerned as what will happen
once I get a real job in the real world. I am set to graduate
from college in May and I will most likely be working a 9 - 5 job soon
after.

Typically I am in bed by 6am EST. On my days I have class I have to be
up at 11:30am, so taht's no real problem. On my off days I'm up at 3pm
EST and at work by 5pm.

I absolutely cannot get into a normal sleep schedule. As of today
I have tried everything from OTC sleeping drugs, marijuana,
alcohool, benzos, changing my daily habits as far as free time and work
go. I've
also tried exercising during the afternoons... I'm still wired once the
sun goes down. I've tried cutting caffeine completely out of my
diet
and that made very little difference.

How well does ambien work for maintaining a regular sleep cycle? Are there any other suggestions for this type of problem?

I have insurance and I'm considering going to see my general practitioner doctor. Will he be able to help me out?

*note* I have no intentions on abusing anything, I just really want to
have a regular and consistent sleep schedule. In many senses, my
future might depend on it.
