Question using Sodium Bicarbonate daily to self-medicate GBL Acidosis?

Ive read that a Sodium Bicarbonate is used to tread acidosis in hospitals(IV). But is it possible to use an OTC product, like the bags on the spice-rack in the local store? To reduce risk of acidosis when using GBL, or even medicate if one where to get symptoms that indicate small acidosis,
what dosages of the pure "spice" avail. in stores, can safely be used for this?

Anyone got a clue?

Re: using Sodium Bicarbonate daily to self-medicate GBL Acidosis?

Yeah, but if one overdoes it with the soda, one could risk to turn an eventual acidosis to an alkalosis

Ive got a package of sodium bicarbonate here (brand name is bullrich salz), which is used for the symptomatic treatment of heartburn.
The max. daily dose is referred to three grams overall, at best 3 doses of one gram in time intervals of minimum 2 hours, which is a very cautious recommendation, imho. Sometimes I need 5 grams or even more at once until my stomach doesn't burn anymore.
A long-term daily use isn't a problem and the duration isn't limited theoretically, but there are better meds for treatment of too much acid in the stomach.

Unwanted side effects at long-term use are referred to an increased risk for the developement of kidney-stones and the mentioned alkalosis, whose symptoms are muscle weakness, exhaustion and flat breating.
I don't know the symptoms of acidosis, but to avoid abnormal values it's perhaps better to check the urine pH regularly, if one is worried about that.
Test strips should be available at the local pharmacy at pretty low prices, as well as the sodium bicarbonate is.

Great, thanks alot for that info... but 5grams, that sounds like alot. Isnt the bicarbonate salt(sodium) just as bad for you as regular "table-salt"? 5grams of that much salt / day sounds like begging for bloodpressure problems and fuild buildups etc?

Re: using Sodium Bicarbonate daily to self-medicate GBL Acidosis?

Yes, it reacts with the stomach acid to sodium chloride a.k.a. table salt and carbon dioxide *burp*. Guess I should ask my doctor for a better way to control my heartburns, but he probably will tell me things like less pommes frites, generally healthier nutrition and such a shit.
Don't know what fuild buildup means, but blood pressure is still o.k.
I drink a lot of fruit juices and black tea, minimum 2 or 3 litres a day and I think this flushes a lot of salts out of the body. Heavy gbl users usually drinks as much as a cow in the desert, so they drain their body out of salts, too. I didn't experienced any negative effects by the usage of that amount of additional salt, yet.

Sorry, did'nt notice that typo. "FLUID build-up" was what I meant. Sodium chloride binds fluid in your body iirc. Causing all kinds of trouble if excess.

Re: using Sodium Bicarbonate daily to self-medicate GBL Acidosis?

Five grams seems a lot! SWIM feel good with half of that amount, even under prolonged gbl use. SWIM never take it together with GBL though... it really feels uncomfortably.

SWIM would recomend everybody to take sodium bicarbonate as a supplement to combat acidosis, but start with low doses until it feels fine(no leg pain/kidney pain, etc).

But all is a matter of the G-dose...

Re: using Sodium Bicarbonate daily to self-medicate GBL Acidosis?

Swim has tried a sodium bicarb anti-acid remedy and found that it dramatically reduces the side effects. He would'nt advise anyone to take gbl everyday as tolerance seems to go up quite a lot and he does'nt find that the high is as good.
