We have one political party here in Costa Rica called the Libertarian
Movement. They base their philosophy on the principle respecting every
persons freedom. Much of their agenda is based on open market and free
trade philosophies, as well as tax and gob spending reductions.

Among their many proposals, there is one that called my attention. It aims at the legalization of every single substance.

Right now the party holds only a small percentage in congress. Less
than 10%, and yet they have made themselves be heard through aggressive
political tactics. Also, they're the only party that was not hurt by a
mayor corruption scandal a few months ago, so they are a strong
candidate for the presidency on the febrary 2006 elections.

Here's a text from their website, The original text is in spanish, but I've translated it.

it can be found at www.libertario.org

¿Will the current situation get worse with your proposal to legalize drugs?

First of all, let's take a look at the bad results from the current
war against drugs. After spending billions of colones [local currency]
and dedicating more than half of our total police time on this "war",
today drugs are sold at any school, highschool or even prision in the
country, which should be the least likely places to find drugs since
they are the bet guarded. Also, many addicts steal and even sell their
bodies to satisfy their overpriced addiction, and an enourmous
corruption has been born from the drug dealers' great utilities allow
them to bribe police offecers, judges and politicians in order to
mantain their bussiness. Finally, there is no proof that drug
consumption has decrease as a result from this alleged war; on the
contrary evidence indicates that it has increased! All of this probes
that the alleged war on drugs has been a miserable failliure.

We the Libertarios are not in favor of drug consumption, but we
support the relegalization of all drugs, such an action would lower the
price and drive drug dealers out of bussiness ending with the
associated corruption of police, judges and politicians, in the same
mannet as it happend at the end of the prohibicion on alcoholic
beberages in the United States. This will virtually end all the crimes
and problems associated to the war on drugs, because addicts would no
longer be forced to steal or prostitute themselves inorder to support
an overpriced addiction.

What we've got to do in work on prevention from drug use by
educating our youth, and by voluntary organizations to help adicts by
the only way adecuate to the Costarrican culture: education, prevention
and persuation. In conclusion, it's very difficult to worsen the
current situation, becuase the alleged war on drugs has been a
miserable and expensive failiure. If we want different results we have
to attempt different solutions.
