hey guys, after looking on the board and hearing in the news about drugs etc. it seems that we cant get away from the topic -im watching a 'talk to frank' advert on tv right now.
so over the pas decade, research shows that the age group 19-24 experiment with drugs compared to others. what do you guys think about the issue of drugs in society? do you think that, because so many people have taken drugs or know someone who has - can we identify drugs as being a part of mainstream culture? what i mean by this is, does our current generation link drug use with mainstream culture? we hear about it in the news all the time - even recently about heath ledger. there was also that bbc documentary 'should i smoke dope' i'd like to hear what everyone thinks about the issue....negative or positive.agree/disagree have we come to deal with such topics as everyday issues? is it really mainstream? thanks in advance guys |

Re: mainstream culture
I guess drugs in general are instrinsically linked into mainstream culture seeing as psychoactive substances are all around us, whether you label them as a 'drug', a 'narcotic', or whatever.
Drugs have been used longer than society has existed as we know it. Therefore, shouldn't the question be...what do you guys think of the issue of society in regards to drugs? |

Re: mainstream culture
I think, from mainstream society's point of view, drugs are like a dirty little secret, or an unspoken of family member. Publicly lambasted, they are a secret pleasure for many. Most, maybe even all of SWIM's friends currently use or have used drugs, including members of both his work and social circles, and ranging from the occasional spliff to suicidal amounts of heroin. This isn't even taking into account alcohol, caffeine, OTC/prescription medications etc.
I would suggest that "Western society" has as much of a history and heritage of psychoactive use as any other culture on Earth, it just doesn't like to talk about it. |
