Adderall and social behavoir
I am prescribed to Adderall (just was the other day). Seems to be great so far, but I have heard a LOT about "social retardation" when higher dosages come into play. Can someone explain this to me? It can be a scientific explanation if you can offer it.

Re: Adderall and social behavoir
I have noticed an initial increase in confidence and patience with communication, but that wears off within an hour or so. Then, it becomes a pain to talk to people and sometimes the words don't quite flow like they normally do. Lots of brain farts.

Re: Adderall and social behavoir
SWIM reports that high doses of Adderall resulted in very heightened social interactions, including: excessive talking, enhanced flow of ideas, enhanced feelings of empathy and compassion, easy to become very involved in a conversation. He also reports that VERY high doses of Adderall produced generally the same results, some of which are even more pronounced (i.e. talking is even worse, while the flow of ideas may become hindered by the fact that everything seems intimately related).
The difficulty with Adderall is that it is impossible to predict precise outcomes given only dosage, weight, or even environment. Unexpected emotional stimuli, personal tolerance, and particularly personal physiology all change the experience. No two people will ever have identical reactions, although the most common are listed above. |

Re: Adderall and social behavoir
You ever meet someone who you KNEW was on stimulants, who never shut up, jump from topic to topic before any one can catch up with them, who leans forward with theirs eyes bugged out and their mouth a blur? For non-stimulant users, being in the presence of someone who's wired to a high voltage line can be intimidating at best. While your brain might be able to keep track of everything coming out of your mouth, the rest of the world will be left in the dust and just here a duck like quacking. It is really easy to forget to slow down, breath, and let other people have their say.
If you're worried, ask a trusted friend to keep an eye on you, slap you up side the head if ya need to shut up. You should be fine as long as you don't abuse what you have been given and decide to share your new found wisdom with everyone in earshot. Love. Potter. |

Re: Adderall and social behavoir
SWIM finds that stimulants make him very obnoxious and arrogant, when normally he is a very passive person. It doesn't bother SWIM when he's peaking on the drug, but once it starts wearing off he feels like shit for saying so many things he normally wouldn't have said.
A low dose works great for stimulating social behavior, but too much will probably make SWIY just like SWIM. No one enjoys being around people who are tweaking out on stimulants, unless they're on stimulants too. Last edited by SuprSonik; 18-12-2007 at 02:12. Reason: SI |
