Hell On Earth - One woman's story of being imprisoned in the Bangkok Hilton

A new entry has been added to Drugs Archive

Description:

17 mins
2 April 2007
60 Minutes, TV3, NZ

It’s known as the Bangkok Hilton, but don’t ever make the mistake of trying to check in. It’s not the sort of accommodation anyone should have to endure, whatever they might have done.

4,000 women housed in the space of a rugby field. If it rains, you get wet, your food rots, and you find yourself in sewage up to your knees.

All around, there are people in despair - fighting, taking drugs, dying – desperate to get out.

And yes, like the real Hilton, you have to pay for the privilege of staying there.

One New Zealand grandmother tells 60 Minutes of her 11-year stay at Thailand’s notorious prison.

She describes the living conditions as unsuitable even for animals. She tells of watching people die of AIDS. She talks about the fight to live every single day. But she also agrees – she had to pay her dues, she had to take her punishment.

Phyllis Tarawhiti, a mother of three from Wainuiomata, came from a good family, had a good education, and a good home. But bored with life and tempted with the prospect of an all-expenses-paid overseas holiday, she decided to take the risk.

She spent the next twelve years of her life away from her children and grandchildren, locked up in “hell on Earth”.

What did she do, and why did she do it? You might be surprised when you hear Phyllis’s own story. A television exclusive, with reporter Melanie Reid.

holy shit, that prison is a real hell. She is a very strong woman, to have survived all of those years and come out with her mind still sound.

I hope this video will help keep others from making the same kind of mistakes.

Easy money and a free vaction is the hardest money you'll never make and the free vacation wasn't so free, it wasn't too short though.
