I recommend against it, because I probably should.
Nevertheless, I think your friend could safely take the expired Tylenol pills.

As far as I know, the only problem with out-of-date pills is that the potency may decrease, leaving your friend with a bad cough after all.

Codeine isn't the best cough suppresant, mind you. Although granted it does work.
