What is this brown sediment?

SWIM made a batch of ghb acording to the instructions below:

Definitive GHB recipe and common mistakes *UPDATED*

The experiment went well, however on inspecting the final solution SWIM noticed a brownish sediment floating around the solution. Is this ok for SWIM to ingest or does it contain potentially harmful impurities. Any advice on refining/purifying the solution would be much appreciated.

Re: What is this brown sediment?

Never experienced a brownish sediment before. Might be worth filtering through a coffee filter or two to clear out, but SWIY would be well advised to try and work out where the impurity is coming from.

It can be quite common for some bacterial sediment to be found in the solution following a period of storage. This has been discussed in another thread.

As long as SWIY is happy with the ingredients he used then one way to clean up would be to boil it for a few minutes after filtering to kill any harmful bacteria - if it has been stored for a while. If it has only just been prepared then there is no chance for bacteria to be creating sediment that quickly and one must assume that there is an impurity somewhere in the process.

Re: What is this brown sediment?

Is it possible that one's glassware was not as clean as it should have been???
A good buy is a Baby Steriliser - The Microwave kind that sterilises with steam. Wash all of your glassware/instruments, prior to use, really well and then rinse with copius amounts of water (don't want any detergent residue) - then sterilise.

Is it really necessary? Not really.
Is it good practice? Definately! and does ensure one produces in an ideal environment.
For too long people have had to put up with the adulterated crap on the streets. So, keep it pristine if swiy can and ALWAYS filter prior to bottling.
