Pain causing opiate tolerance?
I read something awhile back and told it to my friend Jim, about patients in extreme amounts of pain being to handle more morphine before oding, because the pain will keep awake or give you more adrenaline I don't remember. Anyway Jim has a pretty high natural opiate tolerance(except for with codeine, I know really weird), but he's only taken high doseages of opiates more than 20 mg of hydro, more than 10 mg of oxy, and even he believes it was 10mg of morphine IM(doctor prescribed and injected). None of these ever make him feel high enough to understand why so many people want to take these recreationally. Could the amount of pain he was in cause this tolerance. I.E. His back was so bad when he got the morphine he couldn't even sit or stand before he got the injection.

Re: Pain causing opiate tolerance?
Well the pain could cause a mental-block for the person taking the opiates. Altough the dose is sufficiant enough to get one high, the bothersome pain just blocks out the euphoric effects. So psycologically, yes pain could cause an opiate tolerance due to the brain being preoccupied with the pain instead of the euphoria. But it should not physically create a tolerance, one even in alot of pain could very well OD on the same doses as those without pain. Although if one is in so much pain from i.e. car accident, the adrenaline should boost one's short term tolerance for opiates

Re: Pain causing opiate tolerance?
The article that I read actually said it would create a physical tolerance which I believe had something to do with the amount of adrenaline your body is making when you are in pain. I wish I could remember where I read this because it was pretty interesting. The gist of it was that the more pain you're in the harder it is to OD.
