Opium, sleep and dreams

I only had opiated thai stick, never smoked tar or had the raw stuff. I was wondering though, when you read about opium dens in china there is always something about how opium makes you sleep and makes you dream. Anyone care to elaborate?

any opiate will give you similar effects; the feeling of a deep sleep but also having a foot in "reality", it is during these times that I can sense that I am dreaming, and therefore control my dreams much easier. Some people can control their dreams and some can not, but what opium and any other opiates can do is help you with understanding the connection of being awake to the dream state. I recently had a huge vial of roxanol (anyone else had it?) which is a morphine used for terminally ill cancer patients. The state of "dream and reality" was so very intense thatI would almost immediately sleep after dosing. Very different stuff.
