Dry Opium Pods

Can opium be extracted from dried opium poppy pods? I have been told that if it is soaked in water first, and then extracted with Denatured Alochol, it would be a mid grade quality return.


Is this true? Can it be extracted from whole dried pods?

Yes, opium can be extracted from dried p somnis. The method you describe will only yield what we call "putty" which is not smoking opium by any means. This type of opium is more suited for swallowing than smoking.


In order to yield smoking opium the processneeds to be followed up with a "defating"step involving a np solvent, and the origional extraction must be done with an acidic medium. From this point morphine can be extracted, and heroin can be produced if you wanted to go that far. The only problem is that the process requires a large amount of pods to yield a good quantity of powdered morphine.


Most prefer making "tea" with the dried pods. In fact, SWIM may have a batch brewing as I type this

which do you recomend to use for the first wash and then the second wash?

If I understand what you are asking I would recomend 3 x extraction with a 0.01 M HCl solution, taking the evaporation product up in dwater, 3 x washing of the water with ether or toluene, basification in the presence of the solvent used for the wash, and 3 x extraction of the resulting solution with more dilute HCl. This process will yield smokable powder. It may be slightly oily, but if all goes well it will bethe well knownpowder.

Hi. Wouldnt it be enough to do the initial extraction with either methyl or ethyl-alcohol (ethyl preffered because not poisouness methyl seems to extract more M) to go for morphine?





The procedure would be:





1. Initial extraction with Ethylacohol (maybe repeated 2x) at 75 C


2. Raising PH to 12 with potassium


3. After 12 hours filtering, discarding crap in fiter, keeping liquid


4. Bringing the PH of the liquid down to 9.1 with Ammonium Chloride


5. Letting M and Codeine drop out


6. Filtering or decantating to get the M-C mix





Please correct that, if there are things to be improved, cause it seems not to be optimum.
