Roadside testing discussed again for drivers on drugs

OTTAWA - The Conservative government is considering reviving a failed bill from the Liberal era that would impose roadside tests to catch people driving under the influence of drugs.

"We've talked about the issue and dealing with it in some way, shape or form," Mike Storeshaw, a spokesman for Justice Minister Vic Toews, told CanWest News Service.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving members met with Toews on Monday to push for stiffer penalties. Storeshaw could not specify when a bill would come forward, but he said it will not happen before Parliament breaks for the summer later this month.

Andrew Murie, chief executive officer of MADD, said he expects that legislation would permit police to check blood pressure, eye pupils, and coordination.

SWIM is not too worried if the plan for the test is along the lines of blood pressure, pupils, and coordination. There are 100 reasons why you may have higher/lower than "average" blood pressure, there are also legal medications that one could site for the reason for dilated/constricted pupils, and any time SWIM is driving he is capable of passing a roadside coordination test, whether high or not. SWIM knows when he is/isnt impaired.

It seems there are too many variables to be taken into account for anything liek this to work.
