Phentermine/fenfluramine decreases cocaine self-administration in rhesus monkeys.

Abstract:
DOPAMINERGIC agonists can decrease cocaine self-administration at doses that do not decrease food-maintained responding, a pre-clinical effect indicative of a potential treatment for human cocaine abuse. To assess whether similar effects could be obtained with medications currently used to treat substance abuse, phentermine and fenfluramine were given alone and in combination to rhesus monkeys responding under schedules of food and cocaine delivery.

Phentermine decreased cocaine-maintained responding with no effect on food-maintained responding.

Fenfluramine also selectively decreased cocaine-maintained responding, but only at the highest dose.

Combining a lower dose of fenfluramine with phentermine selectively decreased cocaine-maintained responding, but not more than with phentermine alone. These results suggest that phentermine, as well as its combination with fenfluramine, may be useful in the treatment of cocaine abuse.

FYI: remember Fen-Phen?? Yeah, it's illegal now--caused heart/lung disease because of its serotonin effects in the vasculature. But that had nothing to do with its effect as a dopaminergic drug in the CNS.

Welbutrin comes to mind, but there are certainly others.

I like this article because it doesn't pussyfoot around the idea of treating cocaine addiction with prescription stimulants. This should mean that something like adderall or ritalin or dextroamphetamine could be utilized for cocaine addiction. Tell your doctors!

Oh yeah, BTW... I don't know if anyone is interested in this little fact, but...

JUST for INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY!

Just wanted to say that 4-Methyl-aminorex and aminorex are almost identical to fenfluramine (the illegal one). I believe that aminorex MIGHT be still available as a diet aid in europe--not sure though.

Take this info 1 of 2 ways:
1. stay the hell away from 4-MAR and aminorex b/c they also cause heart problems.
2. just simple information tying together this article's topic and 4-MAR/aminorex's cousin drug. after all, I've seen a HUGE increase in the number of people endorsing 4-MAR, people asking about synthesis techniques lately. Please keep in mind that 4-MAR is NOT a child's toy. It is dangerous. If you take it regularly, then don't be surprised to wake up one day with pulmonary hypertension--an irreversible condition that translates into--you're dead soon. and until you're dead, you're very miserable.

tjre was a study recejtly with Phentermin, whioch soens´t cause vascular prloblems like fenfluramine in addition with sertralin I think or some other SSRI.
