Not exactly a recreational question; Doxycycline Hyclate.
I was prescribed 75mg Doxycycline Hyclate once daily for acne. Recently, the script ran out. I do not feel like going through another $75 of co-pays just to get the stuff again. So here is my question: I found some online, fairly cheap, however it is used for birds. It does not appear that anything is different, save that it is 100mg however that is no big deal in this case. I'm wondering if anybody has any wise words about this? Not a good idea, or what?

What dose did you require before?
I personally wouldnt take it due to the lower standards that animal products are made to meet but im sure there wouldnt be a problem. |

The dose I was taking was 75mg. The dose that is recommended is 2.2mg/kg. I'm somewhere around 160-170lb, so the actual recommended dose for me would be ~164.654mg. Considering I was taking 75mg, the recommended is more than double that, I'm sure 100mg will be more than fine.
In regard to: Lower Standards of Animal Medication How true is that? Might I be taking something potentially harmful, would it just degrade, or is that too specific to know? |

I would ask if the doxy was actually doing any good regards the acne. I knew a guy who was on tetracycline for years - yes years - for acne. And it never did a scrap of good. Only his own vanity was being served by it. If you think it is doing you some good, then:
1. Eat a whole cheesecake everyday to put on the weight so a 100mg dose would be appropriate, then see a weight-loss specialist. Or: 2. Seriously - the stuff for the birds is likely every bit as pure as it's human counterpart. Most come from the same companies. You could put these into solution as needed and measure out 75mg volumetrically. People care more about their pet budgies than they do for their own children quite often. So veterinary meds tend to be top-notch. |

I was always ( as in when this post was made) thinking it would be just as pure as the human stuff, making it dirty would probly be more work for them to do.

lol, Nagognog2
I do believe it is doing some good. It doesn't completely rid the acne, however when I go off it for 4 or 5 days there is a noticable difference. Thanks though, that does answer my question. So as long as it all looks good when the stuff arrives, SWIM may be trying it out. |
