If you go to the grocery store, the only forms of sleep aids they have (WITHOUT a prescription) are diphenhydramine and diphenhydrinate. Both are very similiar in effect. Run a search on this forum for either chemical.
In short, both make you extremely drowsy and unable to register what reality is from your dreams. You do not notice this, because it is not a trip. You actually believe everything you see, and quite often forget everything that happened when you wake up. If you want to try this, I suggest getting someone to watch you. And search the rest of this forum or erowid.org for more info. Good luck, bro. Sorry I couldn't help you with prescription pills...all I know about is ambien... |

A sleeping pill is any pill that helps people sleep. The term "sleeping pill" is not specifc at all. Some are recreational, some aren't.
Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, and Ambien are all sometimes prescribed as sleep aids. Most people agree that these have recreational value. However lots of pills prescribed as sleep aids have little/no recreational value, such as trazodone, Seroquel, and Lunesta. They might be helpful in dealing with the after affects of some other recreational drugs (such as coke), but they are not recreational by themselves. There are also over the counter sleep aids. I don't really know much about these so I can't help you there. |

You should use the search engine, you've been here long enough to know.
There are many different sleeping pills, many of which are perscription only and controlled substances. Xanax is in a class called benzodiazepines, and many benzos are perscribed to help sleep. All can induce sleep, but I think only certain kinds are perscribed for sleep. The OTC sleep aids generally are not thought of as having recreational value. The choices are quite limited as well. In my area, you have a choice of unisom, the diphenhydramine HCl or doxylamine succinate kind, various melatonin pills and nyquil, which just has doxylamine succinate anyways. The only one used for recreational purposes by anyone seems to be diphenhydramine HCl, and this is done rarely. The effects are often uncomfortable, undesirable, and pretty boring. Hallucinations are sometimes reported, but they just don't stand out as being interesting since the stuff is so sedating. Most people consider diphenhydramine HCl to be a deliriant, since hallucinations sometimes occur, but they seem real. Often times auditory hallucinations can occur, but those can seem very real. This stuff is not a popular high for many reasons, in fact one would be hard pressed to call it a high. |

And yes many and most sleeping pills have a recreational value to them, some more than others. And also, Yes, some of them are much like Xanax, especially Temazepam becuase they are both under the classification of benzodiazepines. Xanax is used much more often for Anxiety problems rather than for insomina. Basically, sleeping medications are CNS depressents. If you're still planning on getting something at your local grocrey store, there are many herbal sleeping medications. Also I would recommend if you are going to buy something rather than get prescribed to something, You should try out Melatonin. This is mostly sold at store such as GNC, Natures Farm, and places like that, i'm not too sure if it's sold at grocrey store, but then again i don't know. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal glad and is involved in the regulation of sleep. It used as a sleeping aid and to help reset the 'human body clock', it is a very useful substance when it comes to helping people get back onto a normal sleeping pattern. There is no abuse potential with Melationin, so if that is what you are looking for, there would be no use for trying this, but if you are looking for an Over-the-Counter sleeping aid, Melatonin is right down your ally!
