Can there be permanent harm to your kidneys when you just can't pee?

Would taking a diuretic in this state make things worse, or better? Do diuretics help you pee when you've done a lot of opiate?

Better: It let's you pee so that your kidneys aren't asblocked up.

Worse: A diuretic could lead to a larger buildup of urine, which you still can't get out.

OK, I have the answer to this. Ahem, first, know that urinary retention is a side effect of opiate use. So using a diuretic, can be VERY bad in this state. I t will make your kidneys retain less water (which otherwise is normal) and all that water goes to the bladder. The sphincter of the bladder is not able to be opened by the voluntary muscle groups as its your bodys response to the gut slowing down. That is, less food and fluid able to be digested (IN) less fluid going OUT.

Taking a diuretic will only add water behind the dam. With no way to relieve the pressure, you risk damage to your kidneys first (post-renal nephropathy) and bladder second (rupture.)

Best thing to do is not drink alot of fluids with taking opiates.

Thank you! This question has been nagging at me for quite some time and I've never had an answer for it.

Basically you're saying that the diuretic does nothing to help open that dam so will only place more waste behind it.

Knowing this, is there any other way to help with urinary retention? Muscle relaxants seem to help (or other drugs with muscle relaxant proterties, such as benzodiazepines). Does anyone know of any better way to deal with urinary retention than muscle relaxants (which probably aren't the best drugs to mix with opiates anyway due to the synergy of the two 'downers').

ok, this is what SWIM used to do when he usedto do alota dope and couldn't pee. It only works for men, but i Guarantee it works...

you take the head of your you know what with one hand, and with the other, with your open palm press down on the head and make circles. Basically rub your penis head in circles, this will make you pee, I guarantee it...

Never tried that, Ill give it a whirl, if it works, I have a theroy (sp?) on why it works.

I wouldnt start mixing muscle relaxants with opiates, bad idea. Just drink less, and dont even enter the bathroom until several hours into your high, its a waste of time!

Every time swim went in for a medical detox they tested for liver and kidney function, and every time BOTH were severely depressed. The nurses said that the damage will heal over time, but only with no more excessive "poisons" to filter out. Now, in swim's case it was just heavy H use, no pills. Maybe since pills are pharmaceutically (sp.?) pure (ish) there is less harm, but i think there would still be some harm from using a lot (body still has to filter out the crap).my $.02

Re: Urinary retention

Just a quick word, may not work for everyone. Swim experiences extreme Urinary retention, especially since he has started using tramadol together with codeine. At first it would just force him to sit and pee (usually does anyway), each time taking longer and longer, sometimes opening a tap would help.... then when it fully sets in, swim would have to stumble to the bathroom only to find himself sitting for what feels like forever, no amount of pushing and pulling anything would convince swim’s body that you can let it all out.... till one day swim thought he’ll have a shower and woop, he could pee... Now, when swim is having trouble peeing, just jumps in the shower, even if its only his lower body, it works each time.
Swim has a shy bladder at the best of times and sometimes the urinary retention would follow into the next day which leads to problems, but with effort, he comes right... Hope this helps some frustrated fully bladdered swiys out there..
