Preparation of Amanitas
Hello everyone...
Its once again about the time 2 go picking amanitas ive been watching various patches across town grow and now they multiplied enough for my liking! Now im going 2 pick in a few hours. Last year i fried 2 caps (BIG CAPS) into a omlette because i was scared of the whole toxin type thing people say and i did get effects but i didnt finnish my omlette because of nausea. Now this year im gonna dry em and eat em as caps. Now people have different ways and temperatures for drying! I read on the forum that 170 degrees is the right temp. Now how do i do it? Do i put the caps upside down in a pyrex dish and dry em in the oven @ 170 degrees or upside up? Baking pan or pyrex glasse? I think each way has its advantages: Upside up the juices would leak onto the pyrex and i could scrape it up after. Upside down the juices would infuse into the caps. Someone help me i have no idea what im doing here i just want 2 make sure 170 is high enough temp and that it will convert into the good stuff! Any help is appreciated! |

I justr dry my Amanita in a food dehydrator. I don't know if drying muscaria really gets ride of the toxic chemicals or not. I just eat A. pantherina always to avoid that whole problem. Drying A. pantherina in the food dehydrator does seems to increase its potency some. As far as I know it is not know for sure what makes people sick in A muscaria. It's not the Ibotenic acid or the muscimol as neither of these chemicals when taken as pure compounds cause nausia. It could be muscarine but this drug is present in A muscaria in only very small amounts as far as I know, so it is not clear if there is enough to make someone sick in normal dosses of A muscaria. If I was going to try and get about 170 degrees for drying I would probably use an oven set on the warm setting, and keep the door open. I don't know if cap orientation would make much diff or not, but you probably do want to scap up and juices that drip off!

I just got back and what a hunt i tell u!! I only grabbed the big ones guys i got a 6 inch a 5 inch a 4 inch and two 3 inch caps Not sure on weight.. I also got another 6 inch one wich i discoverd a earthworm looking thing in the gills of it so i trashed the mushroom! But i found somethign els even cooler!! A 20$ BILL!!! YEAH!! i was happy 2 find that 2 seeing as it was 5:30 am i didnt believe it till i got in the door!
1)So i washed the caps off because of the maggot discovery in one... Did i happen 2 lose any of the good stuff out by running water over the caps???? 2)I got them drying in a bag that has one side wide open with a fan blowing on it and the bag is ontop of my satelite reciever wich get preety hot when its on im just leaving them theyr until the sun get hot enough today 2 dry em out a bit... Will they b fine like that or hsould i just do the stove idea? |

I'm not really sure. I have never tried drying them that way. It sounds like it might work, but it may take a long time cause amanitas are very thick. If the mushrooms start to look all super soggy then maybe go toss em in the oven. And washing them won't lower there potency, expect for lowering their maggot potency . Also if you have not tried it yet smoke a little weed with your amanitas. But not too much weed as the combination can be very strong. You can use that $20 toward geting a bag of buds . |

Um, are we talking 170 degrees Farenheit or Celcius here?
