Wow, I cannot recommend this book more highly (forgive the pun).

If you're anything like me, you don't like reading most autobiographies because they are boring. If so, this book is an utter exception. Along with the autobiographies of Richard Prior, Iceberg Slim, and Sanyika Shakur, this is one of the few autobiographies that have not only fascinated me, but become some of my favorite books too.

Here's the skinny: Howard Marks had a fairly sheltered upbringing, and thanks to the fact that he was extremely intelligent and likeable, he got accepted into Oxford to study philosophy at the end of the 60s. While he was there, he smoked his first joint... fast forward 10 years, and he's one of the biggest cannabis smugglers in Britain, with the DEA on his ass.

The greatest things about this book are the fact that he is fucking intelligent, so his writing is a pleasure to read, but also that like the name says, he's a real nice guy at the end of it all. I've bought this book three times, because I gave it away twice. It's that good.

This is one great book. I have just finished reading Senior Nice as well. It is his life between Wales and South America now that he is a pop-culture Icon.
I'd love to get that guy in here for a 'Celebrity Chat" - He's the type of fellow that seems like he would be game for such a thing.

Is Senior Nice on par with Mr Nice? I haven't read it yet, but it's on my to do list.

Howard Marks' "Book of Dope Stories" is also a fucking YES for drug afficionados everywhere. I would write a review for it, but when I realised it's all short stories I decided to save the book for when I'm stoned or high on my own, and as a result I have little memory of the contents. By short stories though, I don't mean fictional ones, they are stories about drug culture and experiences from various parts of the world. Though I might not be qualified to do so, I highly recommend the book!

Ya swim has read all 3 also. They are absolutley excellent. Also check out the Mr Nice dvd.....it's hilarious are very informative. Howard is yet to disappoint.

Oh also there is another book written by his ex wife which swim hasnt read yet....so swim doesnt know if it's any good.

is this the same as the vhs that came out years ago with howard going round the world explaining about dope in various places?

that was a great video and had some classic marks moments

I dont think so. It's him live somewhere in wales i think. He smoke's spliff's on stage and reinacts few scene's from the Mr Nice book and talks about various drug topic's very well.

Im surprised there isnt a link to it posted in the file archive actually. If someone could track down a link it'd be great....it's a good watch.

The book is 'Mr Nice and Mrs Marks'..very good book, almost as good as the original 'Mr Nice'.

awsome book, well written and am proud to have a copy of both this and dope stories in my book shelf....a must for any1 travelling thru S.E asia!!!

Howard also has a pretty cool website thats worth checking out http://www.howardmarks.name/ and i believe he is writing a new book?

Swim got to see Howard live a few months ago when he came to swims hometown. He was very good live, very funny , great charisma. gotta love the guy !
