Alexander, B. K., Beyerstein, B. L., Hadaway, P. F., Coambs, R. B. (1981) Effect of early and later colony housing on oral ingestion of morphine in rats. Pharmacology, Biochemistry, and Behaviour, Vol.15, 4:571-576

[ABSTRACT] Male and female rats were raised from weaning either in isolation or in a large colony. At 65 days of age, half the rats in each environment were moved to the other. At 80 days, the animals were given continuous access to water and to a sequence of 7 solutions: 3 sweet or bitter-sweet control solutions and 4 different concentrations of morphine hydrochloride (MHCI) in 10% sucrose
solution. Rats housed in the colony at the time of testing drank less MHC1 solution than isolated rats, but no less of the control solutions. Colony-dwelling rats previously housed in isolation tended to drink more MHCI solution than those housed in the colony since weaning, but this effect reached statistical significance only at the lowest concentration of MHCI. These data were related to the hypothesis that colony rats avoid morphine because it interferes with complex, species specific behavior.

Pharmacology and Neurochemistry of Methadone

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/local_links.php?catid=133&linkid=8260

Contrary to what might be thought initially, the pharmacology of methadone is only partly known, and current research continues to investigate into its distinctive aspects. Clinical evidence provides key guidance to pharmacological research on the opiate system; on the other hand, evolving expectations from therapeutic drugs or putative agents for addiction treatment provide a key incentive to the broadening of pharmacological knowledge. Apart from the classic description of receptorial opioid agonism, narcotic blockade and tolerance/withdrawal dynamics, some crucial issues need to be clarified in a comprehensive way. For instance, studies have proved the importance of metabolic polymorphism in treatment planning and offered interpretations of apparent resistance to normal dosages, so authorizing the employment of high dosages on a sound pharmacological basis. Also, dosages should not be regarded as stable through time, especially in the first few months, and clinicians may schedule dose variations that take into account such expected variations while pursuing stabilization. Methadone’s action profile in the central nervous system is not exclusively based on opioid receptors, and a thorough knowledge of its 'collateral' effects may explain its beneficial action against specific psychopathological abnormalities. The role of the inactive enantiomer in the context of racemous methadone’s tolerability and action profile has also been outlined. Lastly, some of the therapeutic effects of methadone endure without being neutralized by the emergence of tolerance; one of these is its crucial anticraving property. In order to clarify this issue, the mechanisms of cell membrane endocytosis and signal transduction have been illustrated and compared between different opiates.

Consequences of chronic ketamine self-administration upon neurocognitive function and psychological wellbeing: a 1-year longitudinal study

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/local_links.php?catid=29&linkid=8254

Morgan CJ, Muetzelfeldt L, Curran HV

Background 'Recreational' use of ketamine is spreading rapidly among young people. In healthy individuals an acute dose of the N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist ketamine induces marked psychosis-like effects and cognitive impairments, but little is known about the long-term effects of the drug. Aims To evaluate the long-term neuropsychiatric or cognitive consequences. Methods A total of 150 individuals were assessed, 30 in each of five groups: frequent ketamine users, infrequent ketamine users, abstinent users, polydrug controls and non-users of illicit drugs. Twelve months later, 80% of these individuals were re-tested. Results Cognitive deficits were mainly observed only in frequent users. In this group, increasing ketamine use over the year was correlated with decreasing performance on spatial working memory and pattern recognition memory tasks. Assessments of psychological wellbeing showed greater dissociative symptoms in frequent users and a dose-response effect on delusional symptoms, with frequent users scoring higher than infrequent, abstinent users and non-users, respectively. Both frequent and abstinent using groups showed increased depression scores over the 12 months. Conclusions These findings imply that heavy use of ketamine is harmful to aspects of both cognitive function and psychological wellbeing. Health education campaigns need to raise awareness among young people and clinicians about these negative consequences of ketamine use.

Occurrence and use of hallucinogenic mushrooms containing psilocybin alkaloids

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/local_links.php?catid=65&linkid=8247

Christer Andersson, Jakob Kristinsson & Jørn Gry

In some parts of the world mushrooms have had a central role in religious ritual ceremonies. Ethnomycological studies among the Indian tribes of Mexico - the Aztecs and the Chichimecas - revealed the mushrooms to be hallucinogenic. Chemists from a leading Pharmaceutical company took over, isolated and described the mushroom alkaloid psilocybin, that upon dephosphorylation after collection of the mushroom or in the human body, form psilocin that is the active hallucinogenic compound.

For a long time psilocybin/psilocin was expected to become a constituent of psychedelic drugs useful for treatment of specific psychoses. As the effect of psilocybin/psilocin resembles that of LSD the isolated compound, as well as mushrooms containing the compound, became popular among recreational users of hallucinogenic drugs in Western America, and from there the habit of using these mushrooms have spread around the world.

Psilocybin/psilocin is legally prohibited in many countries which usually treat the compound as a narcotic drug. Some countries also prohibit the use of some or all psilocybin-containing mushrooms. In this respect, the legal situation differs between Nordic countries. Although psilocybin-containing mushrooms are not what Nordic mushroom pickers are trying to find as food or food supplement, there is a risk, admittedly small, that these mushrooms accidentally will be collected. At the present situation, this may be a legal problem in some Nordic countries. This document aims at identifying when this might be the case without going into legal interpretations.

French documentary (french language) Drugs : the french overdose

a France 2 documentary on the current "situation" in France, sweeping broadly from "hard drugs in the country side" to the growing threat of GBL, cocaine and cannabis smuggling.

"this unstoppable plague"....
don't expect anything level headed, from 2nd biggest TV channel- national television.

------------------------

Unreported World reports from Guinea Bissau in West Africa, and reveals the astonishing extent to which Colombian drugs traffickers have taken advantage of one of the world's poorest countries and turned it into the main transit point for hundreds of tons of cocaine smuggled into Europe every year.

With chronic poverty, rampant corruption and almost no police or customs, the Colombians have virtually 'bought' the country, flooding it with drugs money and creating Africa's first 'narco-state'.

From The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, Jan. 1960. Written by Sidney Cohen, MD. A comparison of rates of psychosis in LSD users vs the general population, also includes conclusions about suicide rates, other adverse reactions. Very large study, participants totaled over 25,000 LSD sessions. Psychosis rates and attempted/completed suicide rates in LSD users were not shown to be significantly different than those of the general population. Debunks the popular myth that LSD commonly causes everlasting psychosis in a lot of people.

A New Manual for Guides

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/local_links.php?catid=32&linkid=8231

On November 3, National Geographic aired the first of several broadcasts of *EXPLORER: Inside LSD.* The producers did a good job of showing scientific research being done with LSD in different settings (past and current). The show included several segments about personal use. These ranged from warnings about the danger of "bad trips" to the possibility of a spiritual experience. While the use of LSD for enthogenic expansion of consciousness was touched on, that possibility was not developed. There were several scenes showing the positive role a psychotherapist could play, but no discussion on the value of having a guide. If you are interested in learning more about the role of a guide and the set and setting which makes personal spiritual experiences more possible, there is a manual being written for people to use psychedelics in ways that are sacred and safe. This manual provides support and information for people acting as guides.
