It's a numbing agent to cure cough.

In high doses it can cause seizures and trembling. If you chew it before you swallow it it will cause your mouth to go numb. I don't think it's anything you'd want to take unless you have a sore throat.

Brand Name is Tessalon.Edited by: MrJim

Can SWIM use some benzonatate that he found recreationally? Or is it just used for coughs?

Benzonatate is described in the literature as a "non-narcotic anti-tussive agent". It is apparently chemically similar to tetracaine and other local aneasthetics.

It acts as an anti-tussive by aneasthetizing the stretch receptors in the respiratory system, so reducing cough.

Apparently there are "isolated reports" of visual hallucinations and sedation.

Given that the adverse effects profile looks like this:

Hypersensitivity reactions including bronchospasm, laryngospasm, and cardiovascular collapse
Headache, dizziness, mental confusion
GI upset, nausea, constipation
Itching, Rash
Nasal congestion, conjunctivitis and myalgia

It doesn't look particularly appealing!

eww.... Shit. Thanks. Gonna definetely stay away from this one. It just looked like something SWIM could use because of the benzo in the name.

Yeah this definately looks one not to mess with.

The chemical structure though is interesting, it's massive!
