opinions on addiction

I want peoples opinions on addiction.

This may not be true and probably isn't, this is just SWIMs opinion/experience with addiction.

Okay so from everything SWIM has seen and experienced with drugs leads him to believe that you have to semi want to be addicted to actually be addicted. SWIM has done almost every street drug (does not include RCs) and has never had addiction. SWIM was more addicted to high grade marijuana than anything. This all may be due to the fact that SWIM is addicted to money and rather have money than get fucked up. SWIM was able to fuel his marijuana habit by growing strains without spending much money. SWIM has banged coke, heroin, and E before and never got addicted. SWIM has smoked crack and snorted meth (swim never smoked meth) and never been addicted. SWIM has seen friends and acquaintances deal with addiction of cocaine and it really seemed they wanted to be addicted to the drug. SWIM never wanted to be addicted to anything he is just a curious person and liked to party hard and experiment. SWIM was actually told by someone addicted to coke that they "wanted to be a cokehead".

So can you be addicted while not wanting to be addicted?

Re: opinions on addiction

Hummm....
I kinda think that maybe swiy doesn't get addictive because maybe swiy doesn't' have an addictive personality. People who do have addictive personalities (and are in-fact addicted to a drug(s)) probably come across as wanting to be addicted because that is just how the drug pulls the people in and keeps them wanting more. Then, after a while, the body regulates itself to get used to the drug that is consistently being taken in, and when the body no longer has it....it causes withdraws. So, when a person is suffering from an addiction and feels the pain of withdraw, and thinks about how great it felt to be on a particular drug, they would rather just stay addicted in order to avoid the withdraw symptoms. Sound about right? Make any sense?? (It's 5am here and I'm not functioning too well at the moment!)

I think it can also greatly depend on what it is the person is addicted to, how it's affecting major things in life (money, family, job), and a persons' psychiatry (mental illnesses, depression, body image, etc)

Re: opinions on addiction

NIK thinks that noone wants to be addicted because addiction is no fun. It sounds as if SWIY's freind is in the "honeymoon" stage of addiction, and has not yet had to deal with the loss of control, financial hardships, health issues, deteriorating personal relationships, isolation, depression, incarceration, hospitalization and ultimately, death that result from long-term addiction to the substances SWIY described.

Yea...that's what i meant in the my last post. I think that once it starts effecting money, job, family, relationships, etc....the person is probably so deeply addicted that the reason use of the drug continues is to avoid withdraw.
