ive been steadily taking xanax for years (prescribed) but swim has lately been hooked on pain killers. swim would go thru probably 50 a week at times (vics, tabs mostly... then oxycodone, and oxycontin 80's) ive been detoxing for a week, using some liquid detoxificant. i took a couple xanax tonight to see i reacted differently, IE - not needing as many, and i still need to take 5-8 at a time (0.5MG xanax) should i continue my detox fora few more weeks? swim wants to get back to his normal 3 xanax a day. but i guess its going to takea lot longer than i thought to get all of this out of swims system

'Detoxification' products don't help; even if they would help the body remove the drugs, the tolerance will stay. The easiest way to reverse tolerance is to abstain for a while.

Considering SWIY is prescribed the xanax SWIM would talk with the doctor about possible switching meds or upping the dose. If there is a mental problem needing the xanax then SWIM would not recommend stopping for a while.

yes mental problem. the doctor took swim off of them. wants swim to go see a psychatrist before he even thinks about putting me back on xanax. i started taking them alot, getting addicted, calling in refills to early. swim messed up and called in his refill 2 weeks early. thats when the doctor said no more xanax, go see a psyhciatrist. the psychatrist will determine if i stay on xanax or switch. swim KNOWS he needs something for his anxiety, and sometimes very, VERY, depressive moods. this past week.. ive probably cried for about 3 hours straight. on and off for the whole week, if u added it up.. it would probably amount to 3 full hours of non stop crying from the anxiety. i took a leave of absense from work because i ran out of my xanax, and decided to detox myself. i got some detox liquoid from a healthfood store. the lady said everything should be out of my system in 2 weeks. ive been taking it for a week, and have noticed a difference. but not a big enough one to try and "restart life" without the help of my meds. as for upping the dose he says he wont do it because once i get a tolerance to that, he'll have to up it more, and more, and more.. and in the end, it wont work anymore, and ill end up in a worse position that i am in now. i need SOMETHING for my anxiety.. but the xanax is way to addictive, and i already have an addictive personality. i need something to function in life. i cant live sober. wether it be pain killers, or xanax. without the 2, im completely lost. i withdrawl myself from family and friends (heh, at this point. what friends. i lost them all, long story) i cant even play my xbox anymore. that used to keep me occupied, but im always so stressed about wanting to feel beter, i cant keep my mind on ANYTHING. im just always depressed and anxious. i got my LAST refill today and have already taken 14 of them. i had 90. i guess it was because i havent had them in 2-3 weeks.. and ive been under so much stress... i just said fuck it. ate 5. then 4. then 5 about 10 minutes ago. which now i see is a total WASTE being that its 11PM, and i haveto be up at 7am for work. ugh. all i know is i NEED something to balance myself out. but i dont want to be addicted anymore. i actually broke into my sick neighbors house the other day, knowing he was at the hospital, just to get some pain killers. that right there let me know that I AM AN ADDICT and i want it to STOP. what other meds to you suggest besides xanax that arent as addictve and help? valium didnt do shit to me, i had 10MG valium.. i could take 10 of them and not feel a damn thing. what about lexapro? i hear that treats anxiety AND depression. im kind of babbling, dont even know exactly what ive said.. i guess im just getting shit off my chest. i dunno. if i made ANY sense, please answer some questions

I would have to agree with your doctor. Go see a psychiatrist ASAP and tell him/her about your problems with xanax.

swim has minor anxiety and actually a few hours ago ate 1mg clonazepam (Klonopin). (no perscription unfortunately) i don't have much advice but clonazepam may be more suitable for you than diazepam. some people seem to like it more. anyways swiy should go see a psychiatrist sooner than later. swiy needs to work out his anxiety issues and then try and abstain from them. swiy needs to change his moods/behaviors into healthy balanced ones. swim felt somewhat like swiy at one point. swiy needs to discover WHAT makes swiy depressed and anxious and work on that. sorry if that didn't help much.

Some benzodiazepines, especially the longer acting ones take 21-28 days to be out of ones system.

They have a very long half life in the blood. It all depends on individual metabolism aswell as a number of other factors.

Hey PillJunkieXL, there are some important points you should think about.
In order to give possible directions it might be helpful if you told why you started taking alpraz in the first place? Is there some underlying anxiety disorder? Even if you've been on xanax for years and that seems to be the major issue chances are more than high, that the underlying problems are stille there and need to be solved.

Antidepressant medication could be helpful. Probably that alone would not help you enough when you're used to strong anti anxiety meds. So buspirone - as already mentioned - might be a good choice.

An btw, you shouldn't visit that doctor anymore. How can anyone give rxs for xanax for several years and not send you to a psychiatrist? Never thought that the American healthcare system is fucked up like that. And what about insurance? No health insurance that would pay for seeing a doctor when it is necessary? And obviously it is necessary. If you had gone to so see a shrink few years ago you might have not be addicted to xanax right now. Nobody knows. But obviously you need help and not just pills.

Hope this helps. I know permanent anxety is terrible and torturous. Wish you good luck. :)

P.S.: Sorry for not answering to the question, but detox alone will probably not be enough.

There is no medication to help with benzodiazepine withdrawal. Just a slow, slow tapering.

Do not substitute with other drugs that act on the GABA receptors (alcohol, zolpidem/zopiclone, GHB)

Just type in Ashton Manual on google. I cannot post the link because it contains a forum but there is a slow withdrawal schedule for Alprazolam.

As for the opiates, have a week or two in bed. Or get on a methadone/subutex program. Then If SWIY really wants to stay clean get on to naltrexone
