Senator Roger Bedford, Alabama State Representative Johnny Mack Morrow, Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing and members of the law enforcement community came together Wednesday afternoon to bring awareness of a new drug and to announce new legislation to make the drug illegal in Alabama.

The new drug is a hallucinogenic called Salvia, which is an herb whose origin is from Mexico. The drug is very powerful, causing intense hallucinations, and produces a high similar to LSD or PCP.

Rushing said that the drug is readily available from several avenues and it is currently not illegal to obtain.

Bedford said he will introduce a bill to the Senate making the drug illegal to use, sale or manufacturer. Morrow said he will introduce similar legislation in the House.

"We are seeing a dangerous trend with this drug," Bedford said.

He added that the drug is used in strengths up to 80 times its normal regular strength.

"This drug has been known to cause depression in teens, which have led to suicides," Rushing said.

While the drug has a hallucinogenic effect, it has not been proved to be addictive, but may be used frequently because of the high received.

"The loss of memory associated with this drug could result in other crimes such as date rape," Bedford said.

Rushing said the drug has been outlawed in two states and restricted in several others.

"Eight countries have outlawed this drug," he added.

Rushing brought the drug to the attention of Morrow and Bedford after learning about it from local teens.

Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett said his department has no arrests or complaints involving Salvia but that the resource officer for Russellville City Schools has mentioned it.

"I want to thank District Attorney Rushing and local law enforcement for bringing this to our attention," Bedford said.

"We want to see the law catch up to the science of designer drugs such as this."

What rubbish, as if you would be bothered to commit a crime while on salvia. If you tried it'd probably send you into a spiral of guilt. I think it's Bedford who needs to wise up on his science, calling it a designer drug and comparing it to PCP & LSD (which are in themselves completely different.)
It's a pity that many people will believe anything bad they hear about drugs.

Oh, me oh, my. My teenage child might be depressed becuase he smoked a designer drug similar to LSD. I hope he hasn't been raped yet. Ban this plague on socity and salt the allotments at once!

Unfortunately your average parent, or uneducated person will listen and take heed to this article. It is sad, as these people obviously have no idea what they are talking about. The thing is.. salvia is still relatively obscure and not widely used, not much research has been done on it and these moronic news stories get a lot of attention.

To us, educated and informed people it is laughable, but mum and dad sitting at home reading the newspaper will be shocked, searching thier teenage son/daughters room for this crazy, suidice inducing, desingner drug LSD/PCP hybrid. Sad but true. It will not be long before it is outlawed in all countries.

I'd just like to point out that the article has inaccuracies. First off, this email is coming from someone who does not use, nor ever has used salvia.

That page gives information (all cited) on Salvia and its effects. Salvia is NOT a designer drug. It is a natually growing plant. Like marijuana, it is not altered. The "subtance" is simply extracted from the plant itself. It is not a designer drug. It is not related to LSD (which is synthetic [man-made, not occurring in nature]), or PCP (also synthetic, and used as an anesthetic which is very different).

Is Salvia safe? It depends on where you are and who is with you. Can you hurt yourself will under the influence of Salvia? Of course, but someone can hurt themselves by drinking alcohol, too. Will Salvia turn you into a monster who inflicts harm on everyone in a fit of drug-induced psychosis? No. I have never heard of it being used as a date rape drug, and I have no idea why someone would use a drug with those effects for that.
