Swim is 30 years old and have had the typical symptoms of ADD all my life. Swim owns his own business and also has a script for Clonazapan for the occasional anxiety associated with... Well, life.
Swim just got a prescription for methylphenidate XL 20mg and have taken it as prescribed for 3 days with no noticeable affect. Swim orally took two at once today and noticed a brief (about an hour) increase in energy and then back to normal. Swim has been reading that Adderall will last longer and produce better concentration and motivation results. Swim is not looking to get "high" off the drug, but just more motivated for a longer period of time and less absent minded with work. I have tried Strattera with no results either. When swim went to the Dr. swim asked him about Adderall and swim was advised that it is quite expensive (swim doesn't have insurance). Dr. gave swim the cheaper med in hopes of improvement. Okay, swim's question: How does Swim go about asking the doc for Adderall? How long should Swim wait? Does Methylphenidate take a while to "kick in"? What are the differences between the two drugs other than duration? Swim knows this is an abused drug (both, actually). Swim just wants the better script, period and not fool around with the generic, second best. Thanks for the advice in advance. |

Re: Got a script for Methylphenidate
SWIM would stick with the methylphenidate. At least give it a couple of weeks yet. MPH has no cumulative effect and SWIY should get results within the first two days, it takes a while to "feel" the effects noticeably maybe up to a few weeks. infact SWIM finds that MPH is better when you almost can´t tell its been taken. too high a dosage can dope a person which is counter-productive. SWIY should make a decision on what SWIY feels is right. In the end its up to SWIY.

Re: Got a script for Methylphenidate
If Swiy would like to migrate to AdderalL Swim would mention to their doctor that the methylphenidate Swiy is currently taking causes intense stomach aches, harsh ups and downs, or something similar. Also that Swiy read that Adderall tends to be an alternative for people who experience undesirable side effects with methylphenidate. Instant release Adderall or D-Amphetamine Salt Combo is available in a generic form so cost should not be an issue, just steer clear of Adderall XR or any other pharmaceutical companies ploy to extend their patent.

Re: Got a script for Methylphenidate
The reason to avoid the extended release version is because it is not any more effective and still patented... There is no generic available and since Swiy mentioned they do not have health insurance this would be expensive.
Instant release = Generic = Cheapest option Extended Release = Patented (Name Brand) = Expensive |

Re: Got a script for Methylphenidate
Thanks. How long does the instant release work vs the xr?

Re: Got a script for Methylphenidate
The instant release is suggested to last 6-8 hours while the extended release is intended to last 10-12 hours. The solution is to take an instant release twice a day rather than the extended release once. Although the actual length of effect differs from person to person, but that is how they compare relative to each other.
