just got back from doctor...
ok so i guess this post is mainly for UK residents.
i just got back from the doctor and enquired about ADD / ADHD. she was quite suspicious i think... anyway once we got down to talking about adult ADHD and treatments (im 19) she told me the treatments are significantly different than for child ADHD. for example, no way would I get anything like ritalin... is this true??? its not what i understand to be true regarding ADHD. does anyone here have adult adhd? what treatments are you on? if not, what does swiy get ritalin for? and where from? |

Re: just got back from doctor...
Oy vey sounds like you gotcha a quack for a doc. Swim is sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately in some places inquiring about add and adhd meds make doctors suspicious especially for the young. They are abused as swiy can see. Can swiy go with say mom to the doc? Mom's tend to make the doc's less skeptical about trying these meds. There must be followup and monitoring, and maybe the doc was concerned? Swim doesn't know. No don't take ritalin on your own as you need to be properly treated for this condition. Yes a friend of mine is 60 and takes ritalin, add won't go away. She is adhd, boy howdy without meds is bouncing off the walls at 60!! She would not be able to handle a job if not medicated.
Swim knows a few people from the uk and will ask. |

Re: just got back from doctor...
i know a SWIM who had an extremely similar situation to STUDENT_IS_HERE.
if your in the UK and your 19 its genna be extremly difficult to get rittalin from a doctor. if you where 15 on the other hand it is very easy. the reason is becuase at 16 you change from being able to see an adolcent doctor to an adult one. dont pin your hopes on getting ritalin it wont solve your problems i bet youve just looked at sympton on the internet of ADD and thought "yeah thats me!" just be carefull before you get it, you can buy it online i think |

Go to a doctor that specializes in treating ADHD/ADD. Swim had the same problem and really has ADHD. The first doctor wanted to give swim his money back and kick him out without even hearing about swims symptoms and reasoning for trying to get swims ADHD re diagnosed. That doctor was a weirdo and sent swim on his way with a bag full a Strattera (ugh). After a month of using Strattera and having very nasty negative effects. Swim called the local specialty facility and asked them if they had anyone who specializes in treating ADHD. The next day swim was in there filling out questionnaire's and getting blood test. The doc/phc started swim out at very low dose then raised it and monitored my progress monthly.. This doctor is very understanding and had made wonders in swims life..

Re: just got back from doctor...
The idea of going with SWIstudent's mother as mentioned by cyndi may actually do the trick. When swim was 16, swim told his mother about having trouble concentrating at school. She was convinced that medication may be right for swim and when the two of us went to the family practitioner, he quickly prescribed Adderall and even told swim to experiment with different dosages to find out which was right for swim.
Swim should note that this was the beginning of swim's drug use and the resulting hell that comes with amphetamine abuse. Swim had actually tried Adderall once before talking to his doctor. He fell so much in love with it that he had a steady, legal supply within a week of that first experience. Swim may or may not have ADD; the medication certainly helps his performance in just about everything, however, amphetamine does this for whoever uses it, ADD or not. Swim wishes SWIstudent good luck in whatever he chooses, but advises him to be fully aware of the consequences of amphetamine use before starting anything. |

Re: just got back from doctor...
SWIM doesnt like giving advice on acquiring adhd meds (contradiction SWIM knows). but SWIY has gone about this all wrong. firstly never mention add/adhd or treatments. instead talk to the doctor as if unaware. maybe explain you enter day dreams or for some reason do not complete or finish your work. you interrupt colleagues when socializing ( at work or other ) you forget items vital for work, the only thing you can withhold your concentration on is your vast collection of video games. noises loud or not can disrupt your work for up to half an hour. (say a passing ambulance etc..) there are many symptoms attributed to adhd SWIM suggest you display you have concerns with these symptoms not medications or diagnosis of them. but truly if you do not believe you have adhd then SWIM and possibly others would communicate to you that seeking medications for which you are not in need of is not recommended by medical professionals and has consequences.
