Ritalin vs. Dexedrine - Theraputic Value

A friend has been on Ritalin for many years, it made his behaviour acceptable and made him concentrate. now at med school he is having problems, the Ritalin still is effective on his behaviour but the attention and focus are gone to that when not taking Ritalin, he continues taking it for the behavioural aspect but otherwise it's lost it's effect. he is schedueled to see his doctor soon and wonders whether he should voice his concerns, he knows the only alternative available is Dexedrine and know's his doctor may be reluctant to prescribe it, his dilemma is that if he tells the doctor of his concerns he may be taken off medication totally which would be a total disaster for him. he would like opinions on whether to tell his doctor or not and if Dexedrine can make up for the shortfall in attention experienced with ritalin.

Re: Ritalin vs. Dexedrine - Theraputic Value

Is SWIY's only other option dexedrine because he is strictly limited to those two medications? Otherwise there are plenty of other ADHD medications to try. As far as theraputic value goes, I believe dexedrine would be stronger than ritalin. SWIM has used ritalin before and finds it particularly weak. SWIM also has a precription to adderall, which is half dextro-amphetamine (the active ingredient in dexedrine), and finds it to be very theraputic and very useful. I don't think a doctor would be reluctant to change medications in this instance at all, in fact I would think any good doctor would be the complete opposite. If your friend has a documented history of using ritalin to treat what seems to be ADHD, and he doesn't feel like the ritalin does anything for him anymore, it would almost be cruel for a doctor not to try something new. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, but if it is it's the doctor's responsibility to provide the service of treating your friend's ailments.

geforce hit it right on the head. just tell your doc that uv been reascercing on the net and want to try adderall xr cuz it is an alternative to ritalin and it lasts longer.cocerta lasts longer than ritalin or ritalin xr but its kinda a bunk pill imo.when he was at rehab the wouldnt prescribe n e stimulant except for concerta cuz its milder.

SWIM might be able to give some helpful advice. SWIM has been taking ADD/ADHD medication since the 4th grade. SWIM is currently 23 now and still prescribed. SWIM has had lengthy experiences with a handful of these medications. Taking into consideration Med school, SWIM would suggest Dextrostat 10mg. SWIM is sure that it will increase the ability to focus and concentrate on any subject/task that is infront of the patient. Dextrostat will also give the patient a since of well being and motivation to accomplish any goal that he/she has been determined to complete. SWIM understands that everyone has different chemical reactions to medications but believes if the patient has been treated for ADD/ADHD as a child and is now treated for AADD, this medication should have a very positive effect on the individual over other medications prescribed in the diagnosis. SWIM believes it has a much more pure feeling w/o the side effects that Adderall can leave with a good percentage of people. SWIM would be suprised if the patient will still prefer RITALIN (blah) over Dextrostat, after being dosed, and has had the chance to personally take note of the differences between the many other types of medications.
