I find that the best way to get around a hangover completly, is to drink a full glass of water before you go to bed/pass out. I was told this by my father, who said "Hangovers are caused by dehydration."

Anyone know a diffrent/better way?

i hear water is the best way too, there are commercials for chaser pills or something that " absorb hangover causing toxing" wich later explode in your lower intestine causing major damage, but i dont know if they really get rid of one, those are the only ways ive ever heard of.

First, you must know HOW to drink.

Try a few cups of water between drinks. See how that works.

Them chaser pills are garbage! They don't work worth a shit.

I tested them out last weekend and my head was pounding the day after drinking and also I was throwing up.

I was drinking Jack though so maybe thats why.

or maybe its because all the toxins it absorbed were released all at once in your body? Thats my theory on what those things do. Thanks for confirming they suck though str8

I have always found that drinking one 20oz bottle of water for every two beers, as well as making sure there's something other than beer/alcohol (i.e. food) in my stomach before I go to bed, has worked wonders. No hangovers, even after drinking 12+ beers in a night (yeah I do piss a lot for a while afterward, but it's worth it in the end).

basicly alcohol dehydrates you, it does something in the liver while the filteration takes place, then it takes up all the water in your body, and dehydration casues headache and shit...

i think no one would be able remember to get a glass of water between drinking or before going to bed, so the most helpful thing is get up in the morning when you are awake, not monging out in bed, cos the headache jus wont go. then get yourself some water and make a cup of tea, caffine will give you energy to do stuff...

Waiting until morning to drink water is no good. When I've tried that in the past, the water itself makes me throw up (after a very heavy-drinking night of course). The only way to stand half-a-shot at not being worthless the next day is to force yourself to get plenty of water in your system before bed.

I cant understand you people. You guys say drink 20oz of water between beers, and after shots and stuff, but god, doesnt water taste horrible to you while your drinking?

Kemikaru_Tenshu
11-07-2004, 04:07
Not for me. But then again I drink water nearly constantly anyway, so to me it's no big deal. I used to avoid it like the plague, which is strange because it makes me feel so much "cleaner". I find it's actually easier to drink more when you drink water at the same time, while you would think that filling up on water would leave less room for beer etc., it actually works in the opposite way for me. Kinda strange.

You got that right str8.

And KT, that is strange. Whenever I drink water within like 2 hours of drinking alcohol, i'll puke. Its funny, I have to take pills with shots, if i take them with water, i'll puke them all up.

Kemikaru_Tenshu
11-07-2004, 17:28
Damn Psilocybe, that's crazy. Do you mean you always have to take pills with shots, alcohol or no? I know this guy who just CAN'T take a pill, he violent pukes everytime he tries to swallow one (even a little itty-bitty D). So we have to crush them up and put them in juice or some shit. I tried it once and it was NASTY. You get like 8 Vicodin ES in a glass of orange juice and it has this chalky consistency. Shudder.

imo, the best hangover cure is fruit/vitamin C, aspirin, and water. after that,a good hot shower and nap should cover it.

Do you notice a hangover is worse if you "mix" what you are drinking? Do you get a worse hangover if you drink beer and wine or whiskey and rum or beer and vodka.

That's one reason why some people don't mix beers. They stick with one brand.

KT-

Lol, No. I only have to talk pills with alcohol when I'm drinking. IfI try to take them with water, the water will make me puke, thus wasting the pill. But last night I used koolaid to take an Oxy after a handfull of shots, and I was fine.

Definitely water before bed is very helpful. I tend to keep a bottle of water near my bed while I sleep, as I often wake up thirsty through the night, I prefer seltzer. Eating after a night of drinking is also a good idea. Mexicans swear that menudo (tripe stew) is a surefire cure for hangovers, and it actually does work well, due to the chile which releases endorphins and the vitamin B. Menudo works better if eaten before bed, but also helps in the morning. It is the standard breakfast for New Years day in most Mexican households. I find that a benzo like xanax or serax works great. I've also tried narcotics like lortab, but I think the benzos work better. BTW, I actually had scripts for these meds.

water, water, water? yeah water may help, but I think the best bet is to EAT as much as you can before you go to bed. Take a trip to Del Taco, order some tacos, and get a ice tea. Throw in some Fries too..go home buzzed..watch t.v while you grub. Then knock out...when you wake up, you're gonna still feel like shit. Drink water moderately, and get PLENTY OF REST!! stay in, lay in bed till you're good to go.

One tip for the day after:

Dont take aspirin or any other NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxen) for your headache, it's dangerous and can lead to (dangerous) effects on your stomach.

Go with acetaminophen, that's safe.

drink twice as much water or...just drink a lot of water. This will flush out your drinks and in the meantime it will just dilute the alcohol. Please dont get to the point that you cant hold a bottle anymore. You can be lucky like I was this summer, but you can also have bad luck and that is no good. Take a bad Migraine, tripple it and youve got a hang over if this is the case.

In the morning drink eight cups of coffee, take four percocets, two Xanaxes then hop in the shower, get dressed, drinktwobeers 30min.s later from the exact time to which you took the pills and then smoke a ciggerette. < You'll feel better.

The Percocet, Xanax and two drinks should keep you from seeing things in the morning.

If you feel like vomiting when you wake up just drink some coffee then hold off on the other stuff later.

If you don't have percocet or xanax well.................thats just sad.

This sounds a bit corny, but I think a lot of it is to do with how much
excercise you do / Generally how fit you are / how good your overall
diet is.

Take me: Moderate drinker @ age 17, MEGA hangovers

Now, Moderate / Heavy drinker @ age 26, Zero hangovers. Literally Zero.

I just eat decently now, weigh less, and do a load of excercise.
I'm not a stickler for "Get fit", but I think this is the main
point.

Also, I drink almost a pint of water for each pint of beer (yep, I
drink a ridiculous amount of water).. people might say this helps, but
then I did this when I was 17, too.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Milk-Thistle.. In my experience,
that has helped (the belly more than the head), although I dont really
need anything anymore; as I say, no more hangovers for me!

Eat well, avoid dehydration, find the booze that doesn't fuck you up, and Milk Thistle kicks ass! If you can find the complex extract with artichoke and dandelion even better! It tastes like pond water, but stimulates the kidneys, clearing the toxins a lot quicker. A dose befaore you crash, then when you wake up. It's not a total cure, but it helps a lot.

well if your working in a feild where you have access to pure oxygen (i work on air planes so its there when i need it) a few deep breaths of pure oxygen is a great cure for a hang over.. invest in an oxygen concentrator or an oxygen bar.

My hangover escape method is as follows:

- Make sure you can stay awake for two hours after your last drink.

- Drink 500ml of water for every litre of beer.

- Smoke at least one joint.

- If you've had spirits, drink a carton of orange juice.

Follow these guidelines and you should definitely avoid a hangover.

Acetaminophen isnt all that safe eithier. It has the same warning about
consulting your first doctor if you consume 3 or more alchoholic
beverages per day.

Any ever try drinking less? That may just lead to less hangovers.

If i wake up hung over after a hard night of drinking, i find that a few hits off of a joint, or something that will be easy and smoth will help me with the nausia, and then headache. Also if i dont have any weed and i'm really hurting, i will close my eyes and visulize myself smoking a joint just because it will keep my mind occupied off the hang over and i'll usually fall asleep or feel a little better.

can't believe nobody has mentioned this, but aside from the usual water, eating bread, etc, marijuana always gets rid of hangovers. Smoking after a big drinking night before bed will prevent hangovers in the morning, and when I wake up with bad hangovers I smoke a little bit and it's gone. Always works for me.

hangovers are a combination of many different things. dehydration, stressed nerves, low blood sugar. alcohol containscertain heavyfats that are among the hardest for the human body to digest, hance beer bellies. when i took junior year chemistry we had a section on distillation. my chemistry teacher said that people get beer bellies because beer is less refined than most alcohols, so it contains more fats. since the fats are heavy the body doesn't move them very far to store them. he said the best ways to cure a hang over are water and acidophilus (an enzyme that helps break down alcohol) before you go to bed. and if you wake up with one protien is the best. some eggs and cheese can work wonders. the digestive system is strongest in the morning, so protien for breakfast is always a good thing.

My best hangover cure has always been, for some reason, Lemon Tea. I don't know why but a mug of medium strength tea, with a couple of slices of lemon (mashed up a bit to make sure the juice comes out) and with no milk clears everything in about 30 minutes. Quite remarkable!

do those chaser tablets work for curing hangovers? they're a little expensive so i figured i'd ask you guys before investing.

Since school let out for summer i've drank every night (excusing one or two nights where i fell asleep before going out). Basically just one long fuckin party and starting about a week ago i started getting hangovers, which i never previously got after a night of drinking. for a week now i've either been hungover or drunk (or sleeping) so if i was taking the chaser shit everynight you can see how that would get expensive. any other suggestions like herbal formulas? special vitamins? thanks

i've found that if your binging, drink around 8 oz of water while drinking per drink. if you dont have that kind of thurst, buy the revive vitamin water, or anything that has vitamin B. the more vitamin B and water, the better. if you still have a hangover, 2 advil, 2 tums. it will definitly help with a headache and nausea, but it's not going to help with lazyness. or just have 1-4 shots, based on how much you've drank before. that tends to work great, since a 1-4 shot hangover isnt that bad, if you get one at all

First: The night before
It’s 5am, you’re completely shit faced and about to pass out. Good idea, but first, do five things.
1) Drink a shit load of water
2) Take a multivitamin
3) Take a few ibuprofen (like Advil)
4) Put a huge glass of water by your bed
5) Try to exercise (get laid)
The multivitamin helps your body recover from the evils that you’ve done to it. The water just replaces the water lost by all the booze you swilled. The ibuprofen will help with that pounding headache when you wake up in 4 hours wishing you were dead. The water’s nice when you wake up at that point where you’re not quite drunk anymore, and not quite hungover yet. The sex (aside from being good because it’s sex) helps work off a little of that booze.
When you wake up: There are several things you can do to return yourself to the ranks of the human race. Here they are in no particular order. Try them out, and find one that works for you.
1) Bloody mary- The bloody mary mix is a lot like V8. It’s full of antioxidants and vitamins and other healthy shit. Somehow, tomatoes make you feel better. They’re basic, so they help your stomach, too. The vodka is also very important. There is a little truth to the “hair of the dog that bit you” thing. Scientists believe that it isn’t the alcohol that kills brain cells and makes you feel like ass the day after, it’s the sudden detox. If you ween your body off the alcohol, though, you feel better.
2) Wheat grass- A shot of wheat grass is said to help immensely. We wouldn’t know about this, as it sounds a little too ‘new age’ for us. We don’t listen to NPR either.
3) Grass- We do know about this. Get very stoned. Bong hits not only alleviates the pounding pressure in your skull, but also restore your appetite. This way you can go on to the next item…
4) Food- Eat food. Some good things to eat (if you can): Beans and rice are full of Thiamine, which helps metabolize booze; tomatoes/tomato juice (see #1); spicy food, although it’s hard on the old gut, it makes your body release endorphins into your swollen brain. Everyone loves endorphins. If you look at the above list, what you basically have is chili. Eat chili.
5) If the thought of chili makes you want to hurl, eat something. Cereal is good, eggs and bacon are good, but you must eat, or your body will have no fuel to help burn up the booze.
6) Is it in you? Gatorade or Powerade or virtually any other -ade is good. Any drink that gets sugar, water, carbs and electrolytes into your body is good. These are meant for athletes, athletes who push their bodies doing the things they love. That’s you.
7) Get laid. We think it’s always a good idea, but especially when you’re hung. The exercise burns off the booze, the endorphins released in your brain make your head feel better, and afterwards, you can go back to sleep.

SWIM personally doesnt like the ibuprofen etc with it, and also likes to drink water inbetween / slowing down at the end. he found some "recovery tablets" in smartshops helpful, but might be placebo.

i SWIY uses other drugs, the next day some drugs make it quite easy to get "active" again, but in a normal and (physically) healthy way, im talking about a little tilidine or tramadol, of course its opiates and one should be really careful with that and if he had just too much should not mix that since alcohol is still in the bloodstream.

Good advice.
Swim's hangover friend is the bud, certainly. Inducing the appetite always has helped swim tremendously.
Also a little booze can help.

I always heard about the tradition of drinking a bloody mary the next morning, but never heard it explained this way. So the reason it makes you feel better is that it is actually preventing neurological damage? I guess that makes sense... Can anyone verify this?

I will tell SWIM to give it a try next time he drinks too much.

Swim has found that piracetam is an amazing remedy for hangovers. You should still hydrate yourself and eat healthy of course, but if you have a bad headache from a night of drinking, piracetam can be a lifesaver.

Swim isn't sure if piracetam helps with nauseous hangovers, but he has given it to several other people with bad migraines from excessive drinking (and probably too little hydration) and they all agreed that it helped immensely with getting rid of the "my brain feels like its trying to crawl out of my skull" sensation.

If anyone else has used piracetam to counter a hangover please let us know what you think. Swim has had maybe 5-6 true hangovers in his life (surprising considering the quantity of alcohol he has imbibed) so he hasn't had many opportunities to test piracetam's efficacy in this regard, other than several instances where it was offered to friends and reputedly worked very well. Swim has only had two "puking" hangovers in his life, so he hasn't been able to test piracetam in such a scenario.

As for avoiding hangovers, there are a few things worth keeping in mind:

Don't mix numerous types of alcohol. If you drink beer, wine, vodka, brandy, and jagermeister all in one night, don't be surprised if you feel like crap the next morning.

Try to avoid excessive amounts of dark coloured alcohol, which contains a higher level of cogeners than the light or transparent varieties. Not binge drinking is the best way to avoid hangovers of course, but if you are going to binge anyways, its better to stay away from the dark liquors.

Keep hydrated! Its much healthier for you, and you are much less likely to have a hangover the next day. If you are still drunk when falling asleep, be sure to keep some water nearby for when you wake up, and try to hydrate yourself before sleeping.

The best (and most obvious) tip is to not drink so much in the first place! Be responsible and don't overdo it, you'll have a better time and not have to deal with the after effects either!

About the headache that typically characterizes hangovers. I believe that it originates from the alcohol induced dehydration. The membranes in your brain (connecting it to the skull?) dry up and shrink, so they get stretched out. I don't know how accurate this is, but its painful just thinking about it!

Expat98
29-04-2008, 22:14
If anyone else has used piracetam to counter a hangover please let us know what you think.

Now that you mention it, yes, SWIM has found that piracetam does help him feel better and cut through the brain fog that sometimes persists for a day or two (or longer) after drinking too much. But he has not tried it in a situation where he was really physically ill from a hangover...puking, bad headache, etc. (I hope my buddy SWIM is never in that situation again!)

Speaking of types of alcohol, vodka is the purest form of alcohol available and is supposed to be the least likely to give you a hangover (factoring in the different percentages of alcohol in different beverages). Obviously, anything will give you a hangover if you drink too much though.

'cutting through the brain fog' is exactly how swim would describe it (he almost used that exact wording). Even without a hangover, swim finds that piracetam ameliorates any lingering effects of drinking from the night before.

Otherwise, swim and several of his friends found that piracetam was a godsend when dealing with terrible migraines the day after drinking. Worked quicker and more effectively than anything else swim would think to use. As mentioned before though, not sure about its effect on 'puking hangovers'.

Speaking of types of alcohol, vodka is the purest form of alcohol available and is supposed to be the least likely to give you a hangover (factoring in the different percentages of alcohol in different beverages). Obviously, anything will give you a hangover if you drink too much though.

Vodka is swim's favourite alcohol. He prefers to drink it straight, sometimes chugging it straight out of the bottle, sans chase. Those were mostly the old days though, swim doesn't overindulge in liquor anymore due to excessive blackouts back in the day. He still enjoys straight vodka from time to time, but not in the quantities of the past. Perhaps his fondness of vodka over other liquors is a reason for his relative lack of experience with hangovers.

Regarding your last point, swim can certainly confirm that. While he almost never gets hangovers, and certainly not with vodka alone, there is one occasion that serves to warn of overindulging in any form of alcohol!

Swim actually posted about this occurrence in this thread (http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=218519). Quote is below.

Due to retarded circumstances swim ended up drinking a liter bottle of Absolut Citron in close to 30-40 minutes by himself minus a sip or two by another person. He didn't really realize what he had done until he stood up as he was almost about to get into a fight with another guy in the room. His head started kicking back and he had no balance so his roommates noticed quickly that something was wrong. Everyone else got out and swim proceded to puke six or more times all around the room. His roommates stripped him and put him in the shower where he puked more, and when he came out he was still crying and incoherent and simply fucked is the best way to put it. Swim ended up with a two day hangover that absolutely killed him on the six hour or so train ride he had to go on the next day! It was probably the worst drinking experience of swim's life, and swim isn't sure if he can ever repeat it.

Oh and I forgot to mention, this whole experience took place at somewhere between 2800 - 3000 meters altitude! So swim was absolutely fucked! Ugh he feels sick even thinking about it.

exactly the same for SWIM !! but he still gets the hangovers from time to time, but the times when he drank a straight glass of vodka are over.. :) but vodka is his favorite, he doesnt like beer, wine makes him feel strange, rum & whiskey gives him a bad "high" and hangover and most other stuff is for girls (or alcoholics) anyways..

Swim cures his hangovers thus:

1. Water; as much as you can drink, the more the better!
2. Weed to make you not care as much. and to decrease nausea and help keep food down.
3. Light snack, summin healthy I guess.
4. More water.
5. Some asparin for any lingering headache.

Never hair of the Dog. Bad idea.

Geeza added 1 Minutes and 41 Seconds later...

Also swim heard that the darker the drink the worse the hangover. Scientifically backed up. Something to do with the pigments/chemicals that make it that colour.

Salt and sugar.

It doesn't have to be plain salt and sugar though.

A couple of sugary teas and slices of marmite on toast do the trick too.

Here is a good list of purported hangover remedies, with evaluations of the efficacy of each one. From Howstuffworks:

Food and Drink Remedies - Fact or Fiction?

Hangover remedies include everything from "a hair of the dog that bit you" (drinking a little more alcohol the next morning), to burnt toast and black coffee to an over-the-counter product like Chaser. Which of all the endless theoretical remedies actually have truth behind them?

Hair of the Dog

Contrary to popular belief, more of the "hair of the dog that bit you" only delays the inevitable. One of the reasons hangovers are so unpleasant is the liver is still processing the toxins left over from alcohol metabolism. Drinking more alcohol can make the symptoms seem to lessen at first but will only make the situation worse once the liver breaks the alcohol down, because it will have even more toxins to deal with.

Conclusion:

* FICTION - Remedy

Burnt Toast

At first, the burnt toast remedy may seem that it is actually based on scientific fact. The culprit behind this fictional cure is the carbon in the charred bread. Carbon can act like a filter in the body. While it is true that activated charcoal (which is a treated form of carbon) is used to treat some types of poisonings, it is not currently used to treat alcohol poisoning (something that is vastly different from a regular hangover).

Reportedly, the filtering effect of charcoal is behind the success of over-the-counter remedies such as Chaser and Sob'r-K HangoverStopper, which claim carbon as their main ingredient. These over-the-counter remedies are taken prior to drinking. Manufacturers claim that the activated charcoal in the pills "attracts" congeners (more on over-the-counter remedies on the following page).

The carbon/charcoal found on burnt toast is not the same as activated charcoal, nor is it the equivalent of taking an OTC hangover remedy.

Conclusion:

* FICTION - Prevention and Remedy

Black Coffee

Coffee contains a high amount of caffeine, which is a stimulant and therefore helps fight fatigue. But when the caffeine wears off, a drinker may be even more tired than before. It can help alleviate a pounding head because caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it reduces the size of blood vessels. This counteracts the effect of the alcohol, which makes them swell, making the head hurt in the first place. Unfortunately, caffeine is also a diuretic like alcohol and can make a drinker even more dehydrated than before, thereby increasing the severity of the hangover. Overall, coffee is not a good hangover cure.

Conclusion:

* FICTION - Remedy

Fried or Fatty Foods

Although eating fried or fatty foods the morning after will probably only irritate a drinker's stomach further, eating them before drinking can actually be helpful. Putting anything in the stomach prior to indulging in alcohol helps prevent a hangover, but fatty foods in particular stick to the stomach lining longer and therefore slow down the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream. While that might make it take longer to feel the alcohol's effects, it also gives the body more time to process the byproducts and will increase a drinker's chances of feeling decent in the morning. So much so, in fact, that a Mediterranean folk tactic is to take a spoonful of olive oil before drinking alcohol. Eating lighter food such as a fruit smoothie will provide energy and alleviate some symptoms by replenishing the electrolytes the body lost from dehydration.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Prevention
* FICTION - Remedy

Eggs

Eating eggs the morning after provides energy like any other food, which is the primary benefit. But eggs do also contain large amounts of cysteine, the substance that breaks down the hangover-causing toxin acetaldehyde in the liver's easily depleted glutathione. Therefore, eggs can potentially help mop up the left-over toxins.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Remedy

Bananas

Eating bananas the morning after a night of heavy drinking provides lost electrolytes like any food would, but it also specifically replenishes the potassium lost to alcohol's diuretic effect. Other potassium-rich foods such as kiwi fruit or sports drinks work just as well.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Remedy

Water

Replenishing the body's water supply after a night of drinking combats dehydration, and it also helps dilute the leftover byproducts in the stomach. Adding salt and sugar to water helps replace the sodium and glycogen lost the night before. Non-caffeinated, non-carbonated sports drinks can achieve the same effect.

As a prevention method, drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage slows down drinking, providing more time for the body to deal with the alcohol (the body can only process about three-quarters of an ounce of alcohol in an hour). Drinking a few glasses of water before going to bed helps fight dehydration after the body finishes breaking down the alcohol.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Prevention and Remedy

Fruit Juice

The fructose -- fruit sugar -- in fruit juice helps to naturally increase the body's energy. Studies have proven that it also increases the rate at which the body gets rid of toxins such as those left over from alcohol metabolism. Fruit juice is also a good idea the morning after because it is high in vitamins and nutrients that were depleted the night before because of alcohol's diuretic effect. Vitamin supplements high in vitamins C and B are also effective.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Remedy

Painkillers

Certain painkillers are more effective at combating a hangover than others. For instance, Excedrin can be helpful for a headache because it combines acetaminophen for the pain and caffeine to reduce the size of the pounding blood vessels; however, prolonged combination of alcohol and acetaminophen has been shown to cause liver damage, and caffeine is a diuretic.

Aspirin is a non-caffeinated pain reliever and is also in a class of anti-inflammatory drugs known as prostaglandin inhibitors. High levels of prostaglandin have been associated with increased hangover severity. In one study, participants who took a prostaglandin inhibitor before bed reported less of a headache and less nausea and thirst than those who had drank the same amount of alcohol but did not take the prostaglandin inhibitor before bed. If you have a sensitive stomach, though, beware -- taking aspirin after drinking can make your stomach hurt even worse.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Prevention and Remedy if non-caffeinated and acetaminophen-free

Over-the-counter Remedies

Hangover remedies such as Chaser, Sob'r-K Hangover Stopper, RU-21, Berocca and Rebound are highly varied both in price and ingredients, so their effectiveness varies accordingly. They are classified as dietary supplements, meaning:

* They contain vitamins and minerals.
* They do not require a prescription.
* They are usually taken in pill form.

According to Hangover Review, which did a study covering many of over-the-counter hangover cures on the market, the only "medically provable" supplements are Sob'r-K Hangover Stopper, Chaser and Uncle Rummie's Hangover Helper because they make use of the effective filtering qualities of carbon to reduce the number of impurities the body has to process (see "Burnt Toast" in the last section). Sob'r-K Hangover Stopper is inexpensive compared to the others, uses the highest-grade carbon and the concoction is patented; therefore, Hangover Review deemed it the smartest choice. As for RU-21, marketed as a secret KGB pill, the manufacturer says specifically that it is not an anti-hangover pill but a supplement for detoxification. (By the way, its main ingredients -- dextrose, L-Glutamine and vitamin C -- can be found in high amounts in everyday foods). Rebound has the same ingredients as RU-21 plus a few other vitamins and oddities such as "young barley grass juice powder," but it is still basically a multivitamin. Berocca, again, is not a hangover cure -- it's simply a multivitamin that claims to increase energy naturally (through vitamins).

The secret to most of these purported "miracle cures" may in fact be the amount of water a drinker ingests when taking them. Many require taking a pill (or two) with a glass (or two) of water before drinking alcohol, and then continuing to take the pills over the course of the evening with full glasses of water, before bed with a full glass of water, and upon waking with a full glass of water. The hydration alone greatly improves the chances of having little-to-no hangover, and the vitamins in the pills just give it a little, albeit expensive, boost.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Prevention and Remedy for the carbon-based products
* FICTION - Prevention and Remedy for the non-carbon based products

Time

The only complete cure for a hangover is time. No matter what a drinker does, the body still has to clean up all the toxic byproducts left over from the evening before. But the above factual remedies can help speed up the process.

Conclusion:

* FACT - Remedy

Ontop of all of the advice already offered, eat or drink something salty. The salt allows your body to hold onto water more effectively, rather than it being urinated out. Do not just drink water. Either add a pinch of salt to the water, or eat something salty with the water. Believe SWIM when he says that it makes a significant difference to hydration levels. Studies, including those of Dr. Hiroshi Nose have proven this.

I was out drinking last night, walked home (4MILES at 3in the morning is fun :D!) and found some electrolyte powder in the medicine cupboard, my granny had them when she had cancer to replace salts lost from dehydration. Seriously, took one in water going to bed, and woke up feeling fine. and this was after a heavy night involving Sambuca and absinthe on an empty stomach.

In simple terms, an electrolyte is a material that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts an electric current. A simple but effective electrolyte/rehydration drink can be made by adding salt and sugar (optional) to water. Not too much salt, just enough so that one can detect a slight saltiness. About one pinch of salt per glass. When table salt (sodium chloride) is placed in water, the sodium and chloride dissociate, due to the thermodynamic interactions between solvent and solute molecules, to form sodium and chloride ions (electrolytes). The following reaction occurs:

NaCl + H20 → Na+ + Cl− + H20

Adding sugar with the salt improves the absorbtion of the salt because they are cotransported by the SGLT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SGLT) transporters. If you have glucose powder then great but table sugar (sucrose) will do the job aswel, although sucrose is only 50% glucose, so more is needed. A simple homemade recipe is:

1/2 a teaspoon of salt
4-8 teaspoons of table sugar (or 2-4 tsp glucose powder)
1 litre of water

The sugar helps but is optional and salt works perfectly well on it's own in water. Unless one is dehydrated through diarrhoea, in which case the sugar is required for the salt to become absorbed through cotransporation, rather than it being excreted.

What I use for a hangover cure is as follows:

Raw egg
Two tomotoes
Cucumber
Onion
A quarter-sized piece of giner
Lemon water (warm)
A spoonful of honey with cinnamon added.

The above ingrediants will allow your body to get essential vitamins. Then I take a shower (warm) and go to bed. Time of course, is really the best cure. You'll feel like shit but if you remember that what you're feeling is natural and that you'll get back to feeling normal again you won't maybe feel as anxious during the hangover.

I dont need actually any hangover cures.. I just dont have them..Even if I drink whole sea..They are just gone by the morning. One thing that I advice DO NOT TAKE VITAMINS ON HANGOVERS. They will make hangover less atomic but the hangover will be much longer. Just make a great portion of baked eggs in the morning and eat them. See the difference.

Studies always seem to say that hangover cures don't work because there is nothing to back them up but that's bullsh*t I think.

1) Preventative measure - after a night out drink a pint or two of water.
2) Sleep - try to get at least 6 hours.
3) Food - nice greasy full English breakfast to line your stomach. (Works like a charm).
4) Fluid - get some more fluids in you.

That works pretty much all the time for myself and hangover will be gone in less than a couple of hours. If that fails the fool proof way is to carry on drinking again. The 'hair of the dog'.

1. Menudo(the soup not the band)

2. Pedialyte

Or if you are lucky:

1. An IV bag of normal saline

2. Pedialyte

Or if you have to:

1. More alcohol...

SWIM says he hopes he helped but he is sorry to say that there is no sure fire way to rid oneself of hangovers except abstaining from drinking.

My penguin still finds that taking some choline powder (or eggs also can work if you don't have choline) eliminates any headache he has from drinking the night before. He usually throws some piracetam in as well as it also helps him to feel better. He hasn't found anything else that works with this sort of consistency.

If you have a puking hangover you are just screwed, but if your head is pounding my penguin would recommend trying some choline and maybe piracetam combined with adequate hydration.

Just in case I let something slip out the following is simply some lyrics to a song I'm trying to write....

Hangover Prevention:
1) Drink clear alcohol (Vodka not Cognac and/or Whisky)
2) Drink to excess prior to date of possible hangover (very stupid advice, but in a literal sense it will work. If you drink 8 pints of beer every day you wake up fine. But if you've not drunk for a month you'll get a BAD hangover.)
3) RU-21. It's a product that you can buy that is allegedly based on a KGB product allowing agents to drink a lot and remain effective. [Ingredients B2 B6 C vitamins, L Glutamic acid HCl, Succinic Acid, Fumaric Acid (I think these two are the really active ingredients) L-cysteine and alpha-lipoic acid] I have found it works pretty well.
4) Megavitamins (seem to reduce the desire to drink, in me at least if used for a few days (because of B-vitamins?) , which might help)
5) Stomach lining first, and water drinking with and after.

and the totally obvious

6) drink sensibly.

Hangover "Cure"

2 x 100mg Dr J Collis Browne's Mixture if UK based (available in most high-street chemists so I can mention it) : The active ingredient in two bottles is 40mg morphine. (Heroin or other strong opiate will work equally well) - I have shaken big big hangovers with this method. But be warned opiate addiction is worse than a hangover. Proceed with caution. But if your life absolutely depends on getting through the day, this will work. You might get away with one bottle. Taking 2 in one go can provide too high a morphine dose for some sensitive people. Check your tolerance first.

Or better still know your limits and stick to them unless you're just completely lacking self-control, in which case abstain.

Go with acetaminophen, that's safe.

that is awful advice and has caused liver damage to many people. there is a campaign in the US lead by Sen Chuck Grassley trying to tell people NOT to do this.

the best cure/prevention for hangover (other than not drinking) is (in swims experience):

before going to bed:

drink at least a pint of water and take another pint up with you
eat a fatty food
take one of those megadose vitamin C and B vitamin complex tablets like berocca
take a potassium vitamin if your megadose didn't have it

when waking up:

a moderate-high amount of caffeine or other stimulant
have a cold shower
eat a hot chilli pepper
eat fatty food
exercise
drink water

hair of the dog if you are still feeling it, but don't drink too much.

If you have a puking hangover you are just screwed, but if your head is pounding my penguin would recommend trying some choline and maybe piracetam combined with adequate hydration.

swim finds that if swim consumes at least 3 litres of water over the course of the night while in bed swim never, ever, ever has a headache no matter how much alcohol they have drunk. swim has read that it's purely dehydration causing brain shrinkage which causes it, but this is just hearsay. swim hasn't tried swiys exotic cures since swim never has the headache but if it ever comes, will try it.
