View Full Version : am i addicted to xanax (Alprazolam)?
swim has been taking xanax at 5-15 mgs per day for 16 days now. am i physically addicted? what can I do to stop this mess before I am in real bad shape. I can go a day without taking any and I feel fine, so that makes me wonder if I am addicted and what the case is.

If you can quit taking it without any adverse physical side effects then you are not physically addicted, so no worries there. If i were you i'd start taking it as recomended, if your prescribed it. Or go a week without taking another dose. Benzos last 3-7 days in your body, so completely clean your body of it before dosing again. If you try to do this between every use, you will be far less likely to become dependant on it. It sounds like you're serious about staying healthy so i hope you take this advice because addiction is far harder to beat than prevent. Good luck! and let us know how everything goes.

You probably arent addicted but you may want to taper off the drug just incase. Just take like 2mg tomorow, 1mg the next day, then 1/2mg then stop. People have reported seuzires from abruptly stopping. THIS happened to SWIMs friend who is now dead from xanax/OXY. XANAX is a prescription drug but the conesequences from abuse are just as high as with any drug. Death is a possibility and it is sad that a great buddy had to die at such a young age. SWIM does not want this to happen to you, so dont get addicted.

Agreed. And be aware that addiction to benzodiazepines is one of the most horrible to kick. The fact that you are concerned about this shows your mind/body are trying to tell you to quit. Do so, or at least lower the dosage to that which is prescribed. You'll live.

Having been on Xanax for over a year for GAD, I wouldn't wish Xanax withdrawal on anyone. It took me months to taper successfully from 1.5mg daily. Even now, two years later, I still get rebound anxiety if I take more than 1mg Xanax, or even if I take .5mg a few days in a row (I still use it on occasion for work-related performance anxiety and for sleep after psychedelics). In my case the worst part is two days after my last dose, the last time I took 2mg to fall asleep after methylone, and two days later I woke up crying for no reason, I was scared to get up out of bed.
Xanax withdrawal is no joke - seizures can occur very easily, with no warning. It's not like opiates which are very unpleasant but not physically dangerous to quit cold turkey.
I doubt that you are "addicted" yet (though it is possible), but if you keep using at that rate, you will be, no question about it. I suggest following raven's advice - taper yourself down some, and stop taking it daily.
Thanks for all the replies. But what swim isam really trying to figure out is wether or not 16 days in enough time to have bad withdrawals. And trying to figure if swom is physically addicted to the point of getting bad effects if I stop.?
Thanks fellows

You said yourself you experience no bad withdrawals when you dont take it for a day. This would mean that, No, you are not addicted, not physically anyway. Though it would definatly be a good idea to quit while you still can.

/Most of the time an after 16 days of use at that dose you will become addicted .Whether it is a mental addiction or a physical one ,the one and the same can bring on withdrawal .I would suggest moderation either way or you will pay the consiquesses for abusing them. Take it from a long term user and only do it not more than 3 times a week.
